Frazee-The Frazee Hornets were hoping to extend a winning streak, while the Perham Yellowjackets were hoping to snap its losing streak. Frazee’s Hailee Oswald hit a 3-pointer to thwart a Perham rally, lifting the Hornets to a 49-40 victory over the Yellowjackets on Monday evening in Frazee. The victory for Frazee was its seventh straight and eighth win in their last nine games. The loss marked Perham’s fifth straight loss. “I was really happy with our effort. The whole game we struggled to get bunnies to drop. We executed really good stuff and got to the basket offensively,” Perham Head Coach TJ Super said. “We just couldn’t get them to drop and that’s the only way to say it. We got down and we fought back. The second half we made a run, they went on a run and we fought back. We had some turnovers and some missed shots, but our effort and our defensive effort were just phenomenal, so I’m proud of the girls for that.”
Oswald finished with six points, but it was her 3-pointer that halted a spirited comeback from Perham. The Yellowjackets went on a 13-0 run to take their only lead of the night at 39-38, before Oswald’s 3-pointer. Frazee outscored the Yellowjackets, 11-1, after Perham grabbed the lead. Frazee jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first half. The Hornets were led by Kennady Barlund and Josi Tappe during the run. Tappe had eight points during that span, while Barlund had four. Perham’s Brittany Miller sparked a first half run. She scored Perham’s first seven points. She finished the game with 15 to lead the Yellowjackets. “Brittany Miller played the best game she has played all season. She played the best defensive game she has played all season,” Super said. “She was just phenomenal offensively. She was so aggressive and she has those skills. That’s what it has to be, just that aggressive nature. She got into the lane and that’s what we can get out of her when she does that. She handles the ball a lot and it’s good to see when she is aggressive.” Marina Reese closed the half with a base line 3-pointer, pulling the Yellowjackets within five, 22-17. “She (Reese) shot the ball well, but it was the defensive effort on the ball,” Super said. “She is if not our best defensive player on the ball; she is one of the best. It was nice to see her knock down some shots. It was a bummer for her because she was working her butt off with on the ball defense to see her get lit up on a screen like that. Just the way she defends the ball was good to see. She has had some games were she hasn’t had as much time, but she had a game tonight where she had a bunch. It’s about performing, getting it done, getting your opportunity and grabbing a hold of it.” [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"1453567","attributes":{"alt":"","class":"media-image","height":"366","typeof":"foaf:Image","width":"480"}}]] The Yellowjackets cut the lead to one after a 3-pointer from Brittany Miller and a free-throw from Carolyn Baardsen. It changes the complexion of the game and that’s what teams have to do, is make big plays. They made a couple of big ones and we made a bunch throughout the game. At the end, they got the breaks and got the buckets.” Barlund followed with back-to-back lay ups, ending any hopes for a Yellowjacket comeback. The Hornets improve to 8-4 overall on the season, while the Yellowjackets fall to 3-8. The Yellowjackets return home on Friday after eight straight road games. “It will be good to be home.
