GBB: Perham stops Battle Lake

Battle Lake-The Perham Yellowjacket girls basketball team earned its second straight victory to start the season with a 64-57 victory over the Battle Lake Battlers on Dec. 3 in Battle Lake, Minn.

Battle Lake-The Perham Yellowjacket girls basketball team earned its second straight victory to start the season with a 64-57 victory over the Battle Lake Battlers on Dec. 3 in Battle Lake, Minn.

It was a strong start for the Yellowjackets, who built up a 13-point first half lead en route to the win.

Maria Rutten and Sara Herrmann paced the Yellowjacket attack in the first half. Rutten finished with 11 of her 16 points in the opening frame, while Herrmann finished with eight of her 11 in the first half.

The Yellowjackets continued to attack in the second half. Janie Wunderlich poured in 14 of her team high 21 points in the second half.

For the second straight game, the Yellowjackets had three players finish in double figures.

Wunderlich led the way with 21 points, while Rutten added 16. Herrmann finished with 11 points.

Those three countered the offensive scoring punch from Battle Lake’s Katie Rilla and Olivia Hull.

Hull broke free after a quiet first half. Hull finished with 13 second half points, while finishing with 17 for the game.

Rilla finished with 23 points, leading all scorers in the game for the Battlers.

Despite being outscored, 36-30, in the second half, the Yellowjackets held on for their second win of the season.

The Yellowjackets showed improvement at the free throw line as well in the victory. Perham hit 14 of their 22 attempts at the line.

Both teams hit three, 3-pointers in the contest.

The victory improves Perham to 2-0 on the season. The Yellowjackets return to play on Friday with a road contest with Section 8AA rival, Crookston. The Yellowjackets and the Pirates tip off at 7:30 p.m.
