Perham’s Mallory Belka is atop the leaderboard after the first round of the Class AA girls state golf championship at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan Tuesday, June 15.
Marcus Belka, her twin brother, is in 10th place after shooting a first-round 78. According to boys head coach Peder Butenhoff, the leader is two under, “but about 15 guys are anywhere from +3 to +6 like Marcus, so he is in good contention to get on the podium of the top seven.”
Mallory, a junior, shot a first-round 73 and leads Lake City’s Jordana Windhorst-Knudsen and Le Sueur-Henderson’s Makenna Reinhardt by two strokes heading into the final round Wednesday, June 16.
One thing that will be important for Mallory’s final round is her short game, and because the course is dry and firm, course management will be another key, according to head coach Cory Solberg.
"Mallory did really well all day," Solberg said. "She was cool and calm, and she made some really clutch putts. Her short game was really good today and I think that will be the key for tomorrow as well.
"I couldn't be more proud of her play today," he continued. "I was really impressed with her shot execution all day, and we are really excited for tomorrow."
Mallory tees off at 8:06 a.m., and Marcus tees off at 12:36 p.m. Wednesday.
