The Perham gymnastics team continues to raise the bar for itself. Three days after setting its season best score, the Yellowjackets went out and topped it when they finished with a 143.20 in a dual meet with Bemidji on Jan. 7 at the Hauer Gymnasium.
The Yellowjackets picked up their second straight win when they defeated Bemidji 143.2-139.45.
The Yellowjackets are currently ranked ahead of Detroit Lakes and are closing in on Melrose, who just moved into the section this year. It should make for an exciting three-team chase for the Section 8A Championship in Morris at the end of the season.
Jada Olsen and Dena Fischer led the way in the all-around competition for Perham. Olsen finished with a 38.50, while Fischer followed with a 35.70. Bemidji’s Tatum Offerdahl was third with a 35.55 and Bemidi’s Lauren Berg was fourth with a score of 34.55.
Olsen started the meet with a first place finish in the vault when she hit for a 9.85. Overall, Perham finished with a 35.75 on the vault. Bemidji edged them in the team score, which was the only event Bemidji would win on the night. Avery McAllister recorded an 8.75, while Fischer hit for an 8.60. Amber Teberg finished with an 8.55, while Kassidy Kovar came in with an 8.35.
Perham followed with a strong performance on the uneven bars with a 35.3. Olsen earned top honors with a 9.55, while Fischer was third with a 9.0. Brittney Lorentz followed in fourth with an 8.65. Kovar finished with an 8.1, while Teberg ended with a 7.25.
The Yellowjackets recorded a 35.8 on the beam and stayed on it for the most part during the dual. Olsen finished first with a 9.6, while Fischer was third with a 9.2. McAllister finished fifth at 8.65 and Lorentz followed with an 8.35. Breahna Rodewald earned an 8.15 on the beam.
Perham closed the event with its best score of the night when it recorded a 36.35 on the floor.
Olsen made it a clean sweep when she finished first with a 9.5. Lorentz hit 9.0 for fourth. McAllister was right behind with an 8.95 for fifth, while Fischer recorded an 8.9. Rodewald closed out with an 8.8 for Perham.
The Yellowjackets have little time to celebrate as they return to action in Brainerd on Jan. 9 with a 6 p.m. meet against the Warriors.
