Warroad puts up seven to hand DL first loss

No. 9 Warroad handed No. 13 Detroit Lakes its first loss of the season by a score of 7-1 in a penalty-ridden game at Gardens Arena Saturday, Jan. 5.

The teams combined for 53 penalty minutes on eight whistles (30 minutes) on the Lakers and six for the Warriors. Warroad converted on three of six power play opportunities including the first goal of the game by Gage Wilmer. The Lakers were 0-4 with the man advantage.

Owen Meeker had a hat trick and scored the eventual game-winner late in the first period shorthanded.

Will Stowman had DL’s only goal scoring on a wraparound from behind the net on assists from Roland Cormier and Hunter Burnside. Alex Bren made a nice play at the blue line to keep attack zone possession and start the scoring play.

The Warriors (8-5-0) quickly broke open a close game with five unanswered goals and outshot DL 35-18.

Blake Itzen made 24 saves; Max Gausen earned the victory stopping 17 Laker shots.

DL’s record dropped to 9-0-1 and 2-1 in the section. The Lakers host Wadena-Deer Creek (5-6-1) Tuesday, Jan. 8 in a Mid-State Conference game.
