With a power play and goalie Leah Honer pulled, the Detroit Lakes girls hockey team had an offensive zone faceoff trailing 3-2 with only seconds remaining on the clock.

After a faceoff win and three whacks at a tying goal the puck crossed the line behind Northern Lakes goalie Kate Stephens but time had expired allowing the Lightning to escape Kent Freeman Arena with a victory and season sweep Thursday, Jan. 9 after on-ice officials correctly waved off the goal.

The loss marked strides of improvement for DL after losing 5-0 in Pequot Lakes earlier in the season.

Madyson Melgard gave DL its only lead of the game with the first goal at 4:45 of the first period scoring unassisted.

Savannah Abear and Hayden Boelter responded with goals for the visitors to send Northern Lakes to the first intermission up 2-1.

The Lightning improved to (8-10); DL is 3-12 heading into a game against Mankato East in St. Paul Saturday, Jan. 11 at 10 a.m.
