Head coach Scott Piepkorn liked what he saw from the Detroit Lakes girls hockey team challenging Fargo North-South across the border Tuesday, Jan. 14 at the Fargo Coliseum.

The Spartans scored three unanswered goals in the third period to break open a 2-2 tie heading into the third period.

“Hard fought game; our best effort to date,” Piepkorn said. “Fargo just had little more in their tank in the end. That was a tough loss but the girls can taste it now.”

The Lakers managed to keep the score tied after 34 minutes despite being outshot 44-12 in the first two periods and 53-16 in the game.

Both teams scored within two minutes in the first period. Bella Ensrud opened the scoring on the power play and DL’s Emma Coley answered at even strength off an Ella Hess assist.

The Spartans’ leading scorer Josie Hell gave the home team a 2-1 lead but was quickly answered by the Lakers’ Sara Freeman.

Hess was a playmaker for the Lakers assisting on both DL goals.

Rylee Bartz scored the game-winner at 2:07 of the third period, followed by Hell’s second and Jerica Friese in the Spartan third period run.

Laker junior goalie Leah Honer made 48 saves. Spartan senior goalie Alex Kinney picked up her 10th win of the season.

Fargo North/South improved to 12-1-1 on the season and 2-1 against Minnesota schools. The Spartans only loss was the Sartell/Sauk Rapids 4-2 in Sartell.

DL is 3-14 going into the only meeting with River Lakes (10-7-1) in Richmond Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m.
