The Crookston Pirates secured home ice for the Section 8A girls hockey play-in game next Thursday after earning a regular season sweep of Detroit Lakes 3-2 at Kent Freeman Arena Tuesday, Jan. 28.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the first period. Crookston goalie Grace Koshney turned away a pair of Laker breakaway attempts by Emma Coley and Ella Hess to keep the zero on the scoreboard.
Crookston dominated play in the second outshooting the Lakers 17-2 but only getting one goal out of it from Raina Satrom to head to the third period up 1-0. Satrom was part of all three Crookston goals.
The teams duked it out in the third period with shots 15-13 Crookston and two goals each.
Nora Peterson took a Satrom pass and scored midway through the period for a 2-0 lead.
DL’s Madyson Melgard scored at 10:31 on an Emma Coley assist to get within one but the Pirates Cassie Solheim tallied a minute later to negate DL momentum and go back up by two goals.
Melgard netted her second of the game in the final minute of play for the 3-2 final.
Koshney picked up the win making 21 saves. DL goalie Leah Honer stopped 34 of 37 Pirate shots.
Both games with Crookston (9-12) have been close. DL lost 3-1 on the road in mid-December.
The Lakers (3-18) have two games remaining in the regular season: home versus East Grand Forks (11-11) Thursday, Jan. 30 and at Prairie Centre (4-14-2) Saturday, Feb. 1.
No. 2 Warroad (18-3-2) is a heavy favorite to return to state after finishing second in Class A last season. East Grand and Thief River Falls (10-12) are still jockeying for the second seed in the section. The Green Wave hold two victories over the Prowlers, each by one goal.
The Section 8A play-in game will be held in Crookston Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
