Hurley breaks school record, 4x800 relay team second at Hamline Elite Meet

ST. PAUL -- Members of the Perham boys' track and field team ran three remarkable races at the Hamline Elite Meet held this past weekend. Keeghan Hurley, Perham's top distance runner, set a new 3200m run school record finishing in a time of 9:21.37.

ST. PAUL - Members of the Perham boys’ track and field team ran three remarkable races at the Hamline Elite Meet held this past weekend. Keeghan Hurley, Perham’s top distance runner, set a new 3200m run school record finishing in a time of  9:21.37. The 3200 is equivalent to two miles. Kevin Lachowitzer held the former record of 9:28.81. Lachowitzer was the 2006 class A cross country state champion and finished runner-up in the 3200m state meet twice during his career. Hurley was the top-ranked class A runner in the race running nearly eight seconds in front of last season’s 3200m class A state champion, who also beat Hurley at November’s state cross country meet. “It was pretty magical to watch him break the record,” Coach Jeff Morris said. “Kevin and Keeghan are both special kids. I talked to Kevin the night before and he was hoping Keeghan would get out there and run fast and challenge it.” The 4x800 relay team had a challenge of their own, namely an attack of food poisoning for Billy Beseman. “Definitely one of the more painful races of my life,” Beseman said. “All day long, I was willing to run but wasn't expecting to, at all, because we all knew I wouldn't be at my best.” Beseman did run and showed an amazing effort anchoring in 2:05. “We put him anchor in case he needed to drop out,” Morris said. Hurley had been considered as a replacement for Beseman, but the team voted to allow Hurley to run the 3200m fresh. “When the seniors decided to let Keeghan run his 2-mile fresh and risk our race I accepted it and told myself I was going to go compete with the rest of the racers,” said Beseman. “It turned out to be a good decision because of the record Keeghan set running his incredible time. The seniors also came up with a great idea to have me run last in the relay instead of first so if I felt I couldn't finish at least they still got to compete. This relieved a ton of pressure off me which helped me to run at my capability.” The relay team finished second overall, running a 8:09. Speicher led off, Dahms completed the second leg, Carignan was third and Beseman anchored. “It was just inspirational to watch,” Morris said. Speicher’s day was not finished. One hour after the 4x800, he ran the mile in 4:35.46 for 14th place. Speicher was one of only two racers in the mile field  to complete the tough double. The other racer who ran the 4x800 before the mile finished last. “You can see how that is an extremely tough double,” Morris said.   2013 Hamline Elite Meet Friday, April 26 Hamline University Perham Results   Boys 4x800 Meter Relay Meet Record: $ 8:00.07 2007 Willmar High School, Willmar School Seed Finals 1 Bemidji 'A' 8:06.75 8:03.03 1) Carlson, Sam 2) Hendrickson, Elias 3) Gubbels, Nick 4) Nelson, Gunnar 2 Perham 'A' 8:14.70 8:09.82 1) Speicher, Brady 2) Dahms, Dalton 3) Carignan, Nick 4) Beseman, Billy 3 Roseville 'A' 8:29.84 8:18.22 4 Moorhead 'A' 8:28.61 8:18.72 5 Hutchinson 'A' 8:42.74 8:19.61 6 Winona Cotter 'A' 8:23.24 8:20.13 7 Owatonna 'A' 8:44.16 8:24.12 8 Champlin Park 'A' 8:51.04 8:24.74 9 Wayzata 'A' 8:12.04 8:25.19 10 Pine Island 'A' 8:41.77 8:29.74 11 Esko 'A' 8:37.05 8:37.99 12 Mankato East 'A' 8:40.78 8:47.88 Boys 3200 Meter Run Meet Record: $ 8:59.18 2006 Mike Torchia, Rochester Lourdes Name Year School Seed Finals 1 Duerr, Joey Chaska 9:23.34 9:08.18 2 Colvin, Eric Stillwater 9:16.67 9:14.04 3 Olson, Connor Wayzata 9:24.76 9:14.63 4 Ali, Obsa Richfield 9:36.50 9:16.85 5 Hurley, Keeghan Perham 9:38.60 9:21.37* *school record
