The Perham wrestling team advanced two of its four Class AA qualifiers into the semifinals on the first day of the Class AA Championships at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on Feb. 28.

Jack Fudge and Dawson Kellogg earned a pair of victories and will now wrestle at 9 a.m. on Feb. 29 at the Xcel Energy Center.

Fudge started the day with a fall victory over Marshall’s Noah Jensen at the three minute and 29 second mark of the first round at 152.

It was a battle in the quarterfinals for Fudge against Hutchinson’s Cale Luthens. Fudge found himself trailing 1-0 after two periods when Luthens earned an escape in the second. However, Fudge quickly got an escape in the third period and neither wrestler could get a takedown in the final period.

However, Fudge was the aggressor much of the match and it paid off in the first period of overtime. He quickly got the takedown of Luthens and earned the 3-1 sudden victory win.

Fudge will wrestle the No. 1 seed Payton Anderson in his semifinal. Anderson earned an 8-0 major decision win in the first round and defeated Austin Moscho by a 6-5 decision in the quarterfinals.

Dawson Kellog, the No. 1 seed at 195, cruised to a pair of fall victories. Kellogg wasted little time in his opening round match. He gained a lead and then put Jose Reyes to the mat at the 3:02 mark for the first round victory over his opponent from Tri-City United.

Kellogg was fired up for his match in the quarterfinals against David Wilfert of Orono. Kellogg was the aggressor throughout and got Wilfert quickly on his back at the start of the second period. Kellogg secured the pin at the 2:21 mark to advance to the semifinals at 195.

Kellogg will square off with Jesse Midas. Midas enters with a 36-3 record after picking up a fall victory over Thief River Falls’ Mason Iverson at 3:50 of their quarterfinal match. He followed with a fall victory over Landan Duval at 3:42 in the quarterfinals.

Perham’s Aaron Lorentz was defeated in the first round by Big Lake’s Nolan Reiter by an 11-4 decision. Lorentz earned a wrestleback match after Reiter earned a 7-2 decision win over Luke Knudsen.

Brian Ramos was defeated by Brody Rud of Tri-City United in the first round by a major decision 11-2. Ramos was battling a leg injury heading into the contest and appeared to aggravate it during the first period. Rud was able to be aggressive and earned the 11-2 victory over Ramos.

The Class AA semifinals continue on Feb. 29 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul at 9 a.m.
