ST. PAUL -- In wrestlebacks, Cody Nylander defeated DJ Reker of Luverne 5-2 before being eliminated by Hutchinson's Jake Filk 5-3 in overtime.
138-pound Luke Sailer defeated Big Lake's Josiah Brown 7-0 before losing to No. 1-ranked Coltan Laganiere 7-2. Sailer split two matches in wrestlebacks defeating Nashwauk-Keewatin/Greenway's Nick Bruss 5-1 before ending his Perham career in a 1-0 loss to Zach Beaumaster of Monticello.
Josh Werner lost in the opening round of the 132-pound bracket by Keith Thell of Foley 7-0. Benilde-St. Margaret's Logan Kass eliminated Werner in wrestlebacks by a score of 9-0.
William Parks lost his first match in the 170- pound bracket to Kasson-Mandorville's Corben Hansen by technical fall 16-1. Adrian Area's Jesse Slater eliminated Parks 3-0 in wrestlebacks.
Luke Sailer had his hands full with the No. 1-ranked wrestler in 138-2A Coltan Laganiere, of Kasson-Mantorville, in a 7-2 loss in the state championship quarterfinals.

No. 4 Cody Nylander had his own struggles against No. 2-ranked Clay Broze of Cannon Falls. Broze used a huge slam in the second period to hold on for a 6-2 victory.
Sailer trailed 4-1 and 7-1 at period breaks before scoring one escape in the third.
Nylander and Broze were even after a scoreless first period. The second period ended with Broze on top 6-1 after blood time was called. Nylander looked to have the upper hand in the middle of the mat, but Broze caught Nylander by the neck and drilled into the mat to score.
Nylander had a leg, and Broze had a lock on Nylander's head, before Broze used his weight to drop straight down to the mat with Nylander's head in tow.
Nylander was not the same wrestler the rest of the way and got a late takedown to finish down 6-4.
Other area 2A quarterfinals:
138 - DL's Zach baker lost a high-scoring affair, 20-12 to Brett Stolarzyk of Stewartville.
145 - Glencoe/Lester Prairie's Mitchell Hartwig outlasted DL's Parker Jackson in a 6-5 win in four overtimes.

State Wrestling: Novak begins state title defense
Top-ranked Shane Novak, of New York Mills, breezed through his opening round match at the Class A Minnesota State Wrestling tournament.
Novak pinned Jacob Gonsalez of United South Central in 1:48 in a 120-pound match. Novak won last year's 113 state championship and improves to 37-4 on the season.
Of the six Eagles, Max Carlson was the only other New York Mills wrestler to get a win in the first round. Carlson improved his record to 33-7, but needed overtime to dispatch Jordan Fester, of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 3-1.
Tyler Ehnert, of NY Mills was defeated 11-2 by Austin Brockhoff of Sibley East.
Kacee Skoog lost a 5-3 decision to Lee Whitcomb of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at 152 pounds.Skoog fell behind early 4-0 and trailed 5-2 after two periods.
At 182, Colten Carlson of United South Central dominated Noah Pesola 13-3.
Tyler Patron and Lucas Etchason, of Triton/Dodge Center, battled to overtime where Etchason squeaked out a 3-2 victory over Patron.

106: Tanner Reetz defeated BBE's Josey Tensen.
113: Byron Byer pinned Joel Gadient.
138: Bruce Lemon defeated Border West's Dylan Pullis 10-3.
170: Tyler Ziegler cruised to an 11-4 win over Canby's John Deslauriers.
182: Kody VanDenEykel beat Wabasso/Red Rock Central's Jordan Schroepfer 5-1.
285: Tony Reurink was forced to overtime by Tanner Welsh of Dover-Eyota. Reurink won the match 3-1.

State Wrestling - Session 3: Sailer, Nylander win
Perham's Luke Sailer and Cody Nylander both advanced to the state quarterfinals with victories Friday morning in the Class 2A State Individual Tournament.
Sailer defeated Big Lake's Josiah Brown 7-0 in the 138-pound bracket. Sailer controlled the entire match. He will face Coltan Laganiere of Kasson-Mantorville in a rematch of Thursday's team competition in which Laganiere defeated Sailer 12-3.
Laganiere is the No. 1-ranked wrestler in 138-2A. Sailer was ranked most of the season before falling out of the top 10 late in the year. Laganiere is also the defending 138-pound champion.
No. 4-ranked Cody Nylander had no problem versus South. St. Paul's Jose Brito. Nylander scored often in a 17-4 major decision at 220-pounds.

Nylander will take on No. 2-ranked Clay Broze of Cannon Falls in Session 4, which begins at 5 p.m.
Josh Werner lost a 7-0 decision to Foley's No. 5-ranked Keith Thell at 132 pounds.
William Parks was defeated by No. 5 Corben Hansen, of Kasson-Mandorville 16-1. The two did not face each other in yesterday's team competition. Parks defeated Noah Ryan. Hansen defeated Jesse Klatt.
