The first Minnesota Monster Buck Classic takes place at the Perham Community Center Jan. 12-14. Organizers chose Perham because they believe it is the most deer-hunter-friendly place in the state.

The Minnesota Monster Buck Classic is a three-day event filled with outdoors speakers, demonstrations, live animals, displays of local trophy white-tailed deer antler mounts and more massive deer than you can rattle an antler at.

"The city of Perham takes hunting seriously," said Dillan Porter, co-founder of the event. "We decided since we have such a good following in Perham, to bring this event there."

Porter, and his father Steve of Lake Bronson, travel the country showing their trophy live white-tailed deer at sports and hunting shows. They figured since they are a main attraction for so many of the shows, they might as well start their own show. Perham seemed like a logical place to host it.

What's so special about their live deer? For starters, there is a buck named Heart Attack, who will show off a 30-point rack. Then there is Magnitude, a 5-year-old buck weighing over 350 pounds. These deer are as mythical of creatures as bigfoot himself. And they won't even run away when they see you.

Porter's live deer have been regulars at Gene's Sport Shop in Perham during their annual fall hunting sale. Porter said he believes they will continue to come to the sport shop as well as continue this show every year in Perham.

"It's so unique to see these trophy deer up close," Porter said. "They are not afraid at all."

The deer may be the stars of the show, but much more is in store for those attending the event Friday through Sunday.

A local legends competition invites locals to bring in their trophy deer antlers to see who has the largest one. A prize will be awarded to the top rack. Or if you'd just like to have your rack scored, members of the Minnesota Deer Farmers Association are there to measure. Local legends antlers will be displayed for the public.

If you've got a rack you'd like scored or think you've got one the public would like to see, contact Dillan Porter at 218-526-0318.

Speakers will be talking about outfitting, locally and around the world. Food plot planting, deer management and deer hunting property options will also be a part of the talks.

Upland bird hunting demonstrations will also take place in a way Porter believes has not been done before. Event-goers will see both bird and predator hunting dogs working in the community center, showing off their skills for all to see.
