Pelican Rapids-The Pelican Rapids Vikings held off a late scare from the Perham Yellowjackets on Tuesday, Jan. 27 in Pelican Rapids, Minn. The Vikings hit six-of-seven free throws in the closing minutes, earning a 53-45 victory over the Yellowjackets. After taking an eight-point lead with more than five minutes to go, the Vikings slowed things down on offense. The Vikings worked some time off the clock, though it did not turn into points. The Yellowjackets capitalized with 3-pointers from Marina Reese and Janie Wunderlich, pulling within two points. Lincoln Haiby and Grace Forsgren prevented a comeback, by connecting at the free throw line. “Our girls battled and never gave up. There wasn’t one missed shot because of lack of effort, there wasn’t one offensive rebound given up because of lack of effort and there wasn’t any mistakes because of lack of effort,” Perham Head Coach TJ Super said. “When you can play 36 minutes and say that--that makes me happy. Of course, you want the score to read the other way. We got down a little, but we kept battling back. I’m just happy with every single girl. We had girls that battled all night long.” Korf led the way for the Vikings. She finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Maria Rutten finished with 11, while Gabby DeBoer added 10 for the Yellowjackets. DeBoer took advantage of the extra playing time with forward Sydney Roberts out with an injury.
“She (DeBoer) played well. She is a little out of position playing post, but on our varsity, she is the third biggest girl with Sydney out right now. We knew she would get more minutes,” Super said. “She is a threat offensively, and did a pretty good job rebounding. For a freshman, she made her share of mistakes, but every girl out there made a couple of mistakes. Whether it was her, Amy Scheidecker or Michaela Sondag coming off the bench, it didn’t matter; the girls were battling all night. The girls were giving great effort.” Reese and Josie Beachy played strong defensively on Korf for much of the evening. The Vikings used several screens to get Korf her shot in the first half. Korf scored 14 of her 21 points in the first half. The Vikings went on a 10-1 run in the second half, and appeared to be running away with the game. The Yellowjackets had other ideas. Baskets by Rutten, DeBoer and Amy Scheidecker cut it to five, 42-37. But, the experience of Korf halted the rally. Korf calmly sank a 3-pointer, ending the run, momentarily. The Yellowjackets had one last run in them, cutting the lead to two, 47-45. However, Haiby and Forsgren thwarted the comeback bid at the free throw line. The Yellowjackets are now 4-10 overall and 1-6 in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference. The Yellowjackets take on Detroit Lakes on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Detroit Lakes. “We have lost a couple of close ones but our girls keep battling. We hope to turn the tides and turn these into some wins,” Super said. “I told the girls in the locker room that you can be frustrated that you didn’t make a wide-open shot or didn’t get a rebound, but you can’t be frustrated for effort. They laid it all on the line tonight, and every girl should walk out with her head held high.” [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"1489067","attributes":{"alt":"","class":"media-image","height":"326","img-alt":"","img-title":"","width":"480"}}]] Perham 21-24-45 Pelican Rapids 25-28-53 PER- Marina Reese 5, Amy Scheidecker 5, Josie Beachy 7, Michaela Sondag 3, Gabby DeBoer 10, Janie Wunderlich 3, Maria Rutten 11, Carolynn Baardsen 1 3-point goals-Reese, Scheidecker, Beachy, Sondag, Wunderlich, Rutten PEL- Brianna Harthun 4, Mackenzie Korf 21, Lincoln Haiby 13, Grace Forsgren 2, Kaylie Isaman 5, Hally Evenson 6, Katy Thorson 2 3-point goals-Korf 3, IsamanPelican Rapids-The Pelican Rapids Vikings held off a late scare from the Perham Yellowjackets on Tuesday, Jan. 27 in Pelican Rapids, Minn.
