Perham boys cross country top Class A team at Mega Meet

In what might be a Class A State Championship meet preview, the top ranked Perham Yellowjacket boys cross country running team edged out the second ranked, Mora Mustangs, in the Class 4A race of the Milaca Mega Meet on Sept. 24.

In what might be a Class A State Championship meet preview, the top ranked Perham Yellowjacket boys cross country running team edged out the second ranked, Mora Mustangs, in the Class 4A race of the Milaca Mega Meet on Sept. 24.

The Yellowjackets finished fifth overall in the race. They were the top finishing Class A team in the race. They finished with 165 points, while Mora finished in sixth place with 169 points. Stillwater was the overall winner, finishing with 79 points. Three of the top four teams are ranked in the top 10 for Class AA. Centennial came in second with 127 points, while Maple Grove was third with 133 points. White Bear Lake came in fourth with 143 points.

"Despite a hard pace early, the boys fought well and competed well," Perham head coach Jeff Morris said. "Jacob Dickerson and Hunter Kjelshus ran solid for our team both finishing in the top 20. Our spread from first through fourth was around 22 seconds with Clayton Anderson and Carson Speicher posting top 30 finishes."

The Yellowjackets were led by the duo of Jacob Dickerson and Hunter Kjelshus. They earned top 20 finishes. Dickerson finished in 15th, while Kjelshus came in 17th overall.

Maple Grove's Alex Miley was the individual race winner, finishing with a time of 15 minutes and 53.07 seconds. He was followed by Centennial's Reed Kurak, finishing with a time of 16:08.28.

Dickerson finished with a time of 16:48.28, earning 15th overall. He was followed by Kjelshus, who crossed the line with a time of 16:51.91. Clayton Anderson and Carson Speicher earned top 30 finishes. Anderson came in 27th, finishing with a time of 17:09.03, while Speicher was 28th. Speicher ended with a time of 17:09.28. The Yellowjackets had a bit of a gap between their fourth and fifth runners. It's something they know and plan to improve upon as the season progresses.

"Our five, six and seven runners know that they can close the gap because they have been within 10-20 seconds of our fourth runner in multiple meets," Morris said. "We know that we have lot of work to get even stronger to handle whatever pace and also work out the pacing in the early part of the race."

Perham's Nick Listrom finished in 80th place overall. He finished with a time of 18:06.44. He was followed by Brandon Ohara. Ohara closed with a time of 18:11.28, earning an 86th place finish. Adam Siira rounded out the field for the Yellowjackets. He finished with a time of 18:19.03, finishing in 99th place.

The Yellowjacket runners will return to action at the 66th annual Swain Invitational at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth, Minn., on Saturday, Oct. 1.
