The Perham boys tennis team beat Moorhead 5-2 Friday, May 14, in Moorhead. Three of the four singles won and two of the three doubles teams won, with all three doubles teams going into three sets.

"We had a really exciting finish with 1st and 2nd doubles playing their third sets to determine the winner of the dual," head coach Lori Peterson said.

The 2nd doubles team of Avery Halvorson and Michael Anderson won the first set 6-3, lost their second set 3-6, and won the third set 6-2 for the Yellowjackets against Moorhead's Emit Kolle and Mason Voxland. Hudson Hackel and Jack Fudge won at first doubles in a third set tiebreaker, beating Moorhead's Adam Pettys and Ben Voxland 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

"Avery and Michael did a great job after losing the second set and got aggressive at the net to win their third set 6-2," Peterson said. "Hudson and Jack pulled out a really close one by winning in a third set tiebreaker."

The Yellowjackets also won 1st singles, 3rd singles, and 4th singles. "Our singles players had a good day, too, with Soren Anderson playing singles for the first time and winning his match at 4th singles 6-2, 6-4."

Team swept at Fergus Falls triangular

Despite a close finish with Fergus Falls, Perham was unable to pull out a win, falling 4-3 to the Otters in Fergus Falls Tuesday, May 11. In their second dual of the triangular, the Yellowjackets lost 6-1 to East Grand Forks.

Jack Birkeland went into third set super tiebreakers in both of his matches at 3rd singles. He won the tiebreaker in the Fergus Falls match against Maveric Kalenburg 6-3, 4-6, 10-5, but he lost the tiebreaker against East Grand Forks' Jude Johnson-Bohn 6-7, 6-4, 8-10.

Despite the second loss, head coach Lori Peterson said Birkeland always plays hard until the very end. "His matches always have long and tiring points, and he has the resolve to play out tough points right up to the end," she said.

The 2nd singles match against Fergus Falls also went into a third set super tiebreaker, with Michael Schwantz defeating Ben Schierer 7-6, 6-7, 13-11 in a close match. About both tiebreaker wins against Fergus Falls Peterson said, "It was really fun to watch both matches, and they played with a lot of heart and determination to each come up with the win."

The 2nd doubles team of Avery Halvorson and Michael Anderson came back from behind in both their first and second sets against the Otters and also went to a third set super tiebreaker. They went back and forth with their opponents, Charles Vaughn and Josh Kasper, in leading the tiebreaker, but ended up losing 13-15.

"Any time a team can come back from being behind 0-4 and winning the set shows they can adjust their game when needed, and it was great to see them do that," Peterson said.

Josh Peterson won his match for the Yellowjackets at 1st singles against Fergus Falls' Noah Tarcson 6-0, 6-1. He also claimed the only victory for Perham against East Grand Forks, beating Seth Aaker at 1st singles 6-2, 6-0.

Despite some tight matches, the rest of the team didn't fare as well against the Green Wave. The Yellowjackets continue to try new pairings with the doubles teams, so Peterson was happy with some of the improvements she has seen.

"We had some strong doubles teams to battle against EGF," she said. "I'm really happy with the improvement in our doubles teams' serving skills. We just need to work on consistency at the net and returning serve."
