Perham claims the title at Pelican Rapids Invite

The Perham Yellowjacket boys and girls track and field teams have raced out of the gates, starting the 2016 season.

Heading into the Pelican Rapids Invite, the Yellowjackets swept the Harrington Early Bird, the Anderson-Cole Invitational and the Perham Invite. The Yellowjackets added another sweep to their record on April 21 in Pelican Rapids.

"We had a lot of improvement in our team at the Pelican Rapids meet, especially in our throwing events and jumping events," Perham head coach Mike Peterson said. :Some of the improvement came in technique, which we have been trying to improve, not just in distance. We still are rotating our athletes through different events to see where they fit best."

The Yellowjacket boys bested the 12 team field, finishing with 154 points, 49 points ahead of second place Frazee. Frazee finished with 105 points. Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta ended with 97 points, while Pelican Rapids came in fourth with 70 points. Breckenridge/Wahpeton closed out in fifth with 39 points.

The Yellowjacket girls throttled the field, finishing with 149 points, winning by 83 points over second place Frazee. Frazee finished with 66 points, while Pelican Rapids came in third with 63 points. Breckenridge/Wahpeton came in fourth with 61 points, while West Central Area finished fifth with 57 points.

Perham's Ashley Hokanson led the way in the 400 meter dash. Hokanson finished with a winning time of one minute, 3.35 seconds.

Brynnan Covington was a double winner for the Yellowjackets. She was first in the 800 meter run and the 1600 meter run. She finished with a time of 2:32.23 in the 800 and a time of 5:27.59 in the 1600.

Jenna Wegscheid led the way in the 3200 meter run, continuing Perham's strong run in the distance events. Wegscheid finished with a time of 12:28.75.

The Yellowjackets 4x400 meter relay team was victorious, finishing with a time of 4:21.18.

Jordan Martinson led the way in the pole vault for the Yellowjackets, vaulting nine feet, six inches, for first.

Mesa Schultz was victorious in the long jump. She had the winning jump of 15-10.

Sydney Karels finished fourth, while Caitlin Covington was fifth in the 800 meter run. Karels ended at 2:35.61, while Covington came in at 2:38.00.

Covington was third in the 1600, while Karels was fourth. Covington finished at 5:40.15, while Karels ended at 5:51.15.

Hailey Wegscheid was second in the 3200 meter run at 12:31.40, while Abby Tweeton was fourth at 12:36.19.

Ashley Zitzow finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles at 17.58, while Lacy Richter was fourth in the 300 hurdles at 51.75.

The Perham 4x100 meter relay team came in second at 53.65, while the 4x800 relay team came in at 10:50.53 for second place.

Sydney Bahls finished second in the pole vault at 9-0, while Amy Scheidecker and Emily Martinson finished fourth at 7-0.

Lizzy LaFond finished third in the triple jump for Perham, leaping 31-5.

Leah Muer finished fourth in the discus for Perham. She had a toss of 95-6.

The Yellowjacket boys team continued its strong performance in the distance events, with Carson Speicher finishing first in the 800, while Hunter Kjelshus won the 1600.

Speicher finished with a time of 2:08.46 for first in the 800. Kjelshus finished with a time of 4:44.23 in the 1600.

Tyler Berby finished first in the triple jump at 40-.5, while Tanner Berby won the discus event. Tanner Berby had a toss of 127-5.

Speicher was second in the 1600 at 4:45.27, while Kjelshus came in second in the 3200 with a time of 10:23.51.

Cole Carignan earned second place honors in the 110 and 300 hurdles, finishing at 16.42 and 43.05, respectively.

Jacob Dickerson was fourth in the 1600 at 4:54.40, while Clayton Anderson was third at 10:39.57 in the 3200.

Palo DeConcini finished third in the 110 hurdles at 16.98 and fourth in the 300 hurdles at 44.54. Reid Moser was third in the 300 hurdles at 44.43.

The Perham 4x400 relay came in second place, finishing with a time of 3:44.79.

Martin LaFond finished second in the long jump, jumping 19-3, while Tanner Berby was second in the shot put. He had a put of 39-8.50.

The Yellowjackets are back in action on Thursday, April 28 with a meet at Breckenridge. They were originally scheduled to compete at the DGF Invite, however, that meet was cancelled.
