Perham girls cruise to first place at Section 8AA True Team Championships

The Perham Yellowjackets showcased their depth and dominance when they cruised to the Section 8AA True Team Championship on May 8 at Detroit Lakes.

Perham ran out in front throughout the day and excelled on the field as they amassed 575 points to return to the Class AA True Team Championships in Stillwater, Minn. Fergus Falls came in second with 506.5 points, while Detroit Lakes was third with 475.5 points and Pequot Lakes was fourth with 431 points. Thief River Falls rounded out the top five overall.

The True Team Championships are the only event during the season where each entry’s point total counts towards the final team total. Each team has two entries per individual event and one relay.

The Yellowjackets had several key finishes throughout the day, including the continued dominance in the pole vault competition. Ashley Hokanson and Shalie Lipp continue to vault above the competition. Hokanson, the defending Class A Champion, cleared 12 feet for first place. Lipp finished second when she cleared 11 feet. She was close to clearing 11 feet, six inches but just missed in her attempts at that height.

Perham’s Mesa Schultz captured first place honors in the field as well. She had the winning jump in the long jump when she leapt 16 feet, 7.25 inches for first place. She was followed by Lipp, who came in second place with a leap of 16 feet, six inches.

Caitlin Covington captured a pair of first place finishes for Perham. She was first in the 800 meter run with a time of two minutes and 24.94 seconds. She captured first place honors in the 1600m run as well. She was first with a time of five minutes and 22.93 seconds.

Hailey Wegscheid came in third place with a time of 2:29.67 of the 800m run. Liz Birkeland was third in the 1600m run and the 3200m run as well. Birkeland posted times of 5:30.77 and 12:29.11, respectively.

Perham had strong showings in the relay races as well with a second place finish in the 400m relay race at 51.43 and second in the 800m relay at 1:49.65. Perham was third in the 1600m relay with a time of 4:14.00.

The Yellowjackets will compete on May 18 for the Class AA True Team Championships in Stillwater. The field events are set to start at 3:45 p.m.,with the track events beginning at 4 p.m.
