The Perham girls golf team ventured outside of the Heart O’Lakes Conference for the first time and competed at the annual Wolverine Invitational at the Whitetail Run Golf Course in Wadena on May 4.
The Yellowjackets came in third overall, finishing with a 351. They were edged out by the defending Class A and Section 8A Champion, Detroit Lakes. The Lakers continued to show they are one of the premiere teams in the region and the state. They finished first with a 330, while Minnewaska Area was second, finishing with a 346.
Pequot Lakes came in fourth place, finishing with a 385, while Staples-Motley came in fifth, firing a 386. Wadena-Deer Creek, Hawley, Pelican Rapids, Park Rapids and Crosby-Ironton rounded out the field in Wadena.
Pequot Lakes’ Alex Stone was the medalist, winning the title by four strokes. She finished with a round of 75. Minnewaska’s Ashlyn Guggisberg came in second, finishing with a 79.
Detroit Lakes’ Abby Schramel came in third place, firing an 80.

Perham’s Mallory Belka continued her strong start to her varsity career. The seventh grader fired an 81, earning fourth place honors. Belka fired a 42 on the front nine and finished with a 39 on the back nine for the Yellowjackets.
Detroit Lakes’ Maddie Herzog and Shelby Busker rounded out the top six. Herzog was fifth with an 82, while Busker was sixth with an 82. Herzog edged Busker on a scorecard playoff.
Perham’s Liz Sonnenberg cracked the top 10 with a 10th place finish. She finished her round with an 89. She finished with a 44 on the front, while ending with a 45 on the back.
Kolbey Bormann finished with a 90, She fired rounds of 44 and 46. Allie King was a stroke behind Bormann, finishing with a 91. King fired a 45 on the front nine, while ending with a 46 on the back nine.
Alisha Rosen finished the day with a 103, ending with rounds of 50 and 53 for the Yellowjackets. Serena Langen rounded out the field for the Yellowjackets. She finished with a 109. She had a 49 on the front nine, before finishing with a 60 on the back nine.
The Yellowjackets return to action with a pair of Heart O’Lakes Conference meets on Monday, May 8. They start the day at 9 a.m. at the Willow Creek Golf Course, which is hosted by Barnesville, before finishing the day at Bois De Sioux Golf Course, which is hosted by Breckenridge.
