The Perham high school bowling team will begin practice and have an informational meeting on Monday, August 16, at 6 p.m., at the Cactus Lanes.
This is the second year for the new sport, which features boys and girls competing on the same team. Any student in grades 7-12 can participate.
This league features teams from Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Perham, New York Mills, Wadena, Long Prairie and Eagle Bend.
It also is different from the regular school sponsored activities. This sport is not part of the Minnesota State High School League, but mirrors their requirements for students to play.
It is treated more as a club sport with the ability to earn a high school letter. The school district does not have to pay for any of the costs. Most of the costs are paid for by a fundraising bowling tournament, the Perham Bowling Association, the Cactus Lanes, some sponsoring businesses and the two coaches: Lucas Johnson and Tom Helcl.

Participating students do have a small fee they will be charged, but it will be based upon the final number of players. This type of sport may end up becoming a model for the future of high school sports, as the amount of money from the state to the schools continues to decline.
