Perham/New York Mills seventh at Crookston Booster Tournament

The Perham/New York Mills girls tennis team finished in seventh place in the annually tough Crookston Booster Tournament on Aug. 25 in Crookston. Hibbing captured the title at the tournament with 27 points. Moorhead came in second with 25 points....

The Perham/New York Mills girls tennis team finished in seventh place in the annually tough Crookston Booster Tournament on Aug. 25 in Crookston.

Hibbing captured the title at the tournament with 27 points. Moorhead came in second with 25 points. Crookston finished third with 19 points, even with New London-Spicer. Detroit Lakes was fifth with 18 points. East Grand Forks, Perham/New York Mills and Wadena-Deer Creek rounded out the field.

Perham/NYM captured a pair of runner-up finishes with Jade Lenius at No. 2 singles and Avery Beachy at No. 4 singles. JoJo Winkels was the consolation champion at No. 3 singles in the tournament.

Lenius went 2-1 on the way to the second place finish. She earned wins over Detroit Lakes’ Mary Nelmark 6-2, 6-3 and East Grand Forks’ Katelyn Farder 6-4, 6-3 before falling to Hibbing’s Abigail Sullivan 3-6, 2-6.

Beachy opened with a pair of wins over Crookston’s Halle Winjum 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 and defeated Wadena-Deer Creek’s Libby Hartman 6-3, 2-0. Hartman defaulted from the match due to injury in the second set. Beachy was defeated by Josey Allen in the finals 3-6, 0-6.

Winkels defeated New London-Spicer’s Megan Warner 6-3, 6-1 and knocked off East Grand Forks’ Kendal Rand in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. She was edged out by Moorhead’s Katrina Hansen in straight sets 3-6, 5-7.

The Yellowjackets return to action at home for the first time on the year when they take on East Grand Forks, Roseau and Pequot Lakes, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Perham Tennis Courts on Aug. 30.
