The Perham/New York Mills tennis team followed up a busy day with a pair of grinding duals against Pequot Lakes and Osakis. The Yellowjackets suffered a 5-2 defeat to Pequot Lakes and a 6-1 defeat to Osakis in a test against two premiere programs in Class A on Aug. 18 in Pequot Lakes.

“(It was) another good day where we took a nice jump from yesterday,” Perham/NYM head coach Jameson Miller said. “Both teams are going to be ranked and are one of the favorites in their respected conferences. Pequot Lakes returns nine starters and had a player move into their No. 1 spots, so I’m very pleased with how we competed against them as they were very solid last year.”

The Yellowjackets gained two doubles victories against Pequot Lakes as they were swept convincingly in singles competition. Kiera Radniecki and Grace Minten earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Malia Groff and Mirta Vorderbruggen earned a tough, grind it out, three set victory. Groff and Vorderbruggen won the first set 6-2, but dropped the second 6-7 (5-7), before responding with a 10-5 victory in the third.

JoJo Winkels picked up the lone win in singles action against Osakis. She won in three tough sets at No. 3 singles. She opened with a 7-5 win, before falling 2-6, but rebounded to win 10-8 in the third.

Miller said he was pleased with how his singles players bounced back after the tough match with Pequot Lakes. He said he believes they will really grow as the season progresses if they keep working hard.
