Perham/NYM/Henning competes at Moorhead
The Perham/New York Mills/Henning girls swimming and diving team is heading into the stretch run as they prepare for section competition. The Yellowjackets returned to the pool with a dual meet against Moorhead on Oct. 1. The Spuds came out victorious with a 100.5-74.5 victory over the Yellowjackets.
“The girls are pushing hard as we head into the last meets of the season,” Perham/NYM/Henning head coach Jensen Maiden said. “With only three regular season meets left, opportunities for improvement are becoming limited, as well as chances to qualify for sections.”
The Yellowjackets added to their team total with a pair of qualifying swims against Moorhead. Olivea McDonald qualified in her seventh event when she cut three seconds off of her time in the 100 freestyle. Kaydi Murus dropped more than eight seconds and qualified in the 200 freestyle, which is her first event she has qualified for.
Dena Fischer earned first place honors in the diving competition with 228.85 points. Brittney Lorentz tied for third with 180.75 points and in fifth place was Madison Ruther with 143.95 points.
The Yellowjackets opened with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay at two minutes and 15.22 seconds behind the swimming of Hannah Lung, Irene Mursu, Olivea McDonald and Ellie Smith.
Kaydi Mursu came in third of the 200 freestyle at 2:30.00, while Shanetta Reitmeyer came in fourth of the individual medley at 2:55.89.
Irene Mursu finished first in the 50 freestyle at 27.51. Lucy Schultz finished fourth at 1:25.12 in the 100 butterfly, while McDonald came in second in the 100 freestyle at 1:02.54. Irene Mursu came in third at 6:13.53 in the 500 freestyle race.
The relay team of McDonald, Kaydi Mursu, Ellie Smith and Irene Mursu came in with a time of 1:57.36 for first place in the 200 freestyle relay. Lucie Meyer followed with a fourth place finish in the 100 backstroke at 1:19.40, while McDonald was fourth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:24.66.
The Yellowjackets closed with a win in the 400 freestyle relay at 5:16.60 behind the team of Myra King, Chloe Koljonen, Josi Mindermann and Shanetta Reitmeyer.
“We’re bearing down over the next couple weeks, focusing on effort and mindset,” Maiden said. “There are two more dual meets, as well as True Team, and then our practice time will get a little smaller. The girls have about three weeks to prove that they deserve a spot on that team.”
The Yellowjackets are back in action on Oct. 8 with a dual meet at Fergus Falls at 6 p.m.
