Perham/NYM/Henning swimmers prepping for stretch run

The Perham/New York Mills/Henning girls swimming and diving team is getting ready for a pair of big meets before the close of the season. The Yellowjackets just competed in a dual with Fergus Falls on Oct. 8 to help get ready for the end of the season. The Otters came away with a 112-72 victory over Perham/New York Mills/Henning in Fergus Falls.

The Yellowjackets have the annual True Team Section Championships in Grand Rapids on Oct. 12, as well as the Mid-State Conference Championships coming up.

Perham/NYM/Henning head coach Jensen Maiden said the season is really winding down. The Yellowjackets have two regular meets before conference and the section meets.

"It seemed to fly by this year. The girls had a great night in Fergus Falls," Maiden said. "Many of them swam in off-events in order to get a break from routine before really bearing down on their typical events."

The Yellowjackets had four more girls finish the annual Iron Woman challenge with Chloe Koljonen, Myra King, Emily Welte and Katelyn Kratzke. Those four ran the team total to 17 girls to have finished the in-season challenge the Yellowjackets have.

The Perham/NYM/Henning divers swept the opening event. Dena Fischer finished first, followed by Madison Ruther and Brittney Lorentz. Ruther finished second, while Lorentz was third. Fisher finished with 224.45 points for first, while Ruther had 167.85 points and Lorentz had 162.20 points.

The 200 medley relay team of Irene Mursu, Hannah Lung, Olivea McDonald and Ellie Smith came in second place at two minutes and 14.70 seconds. Oakley McNair was fourth in the 200 freestyle at 2:33.02. Ellie Smith finished fourth in the 200 individual medley at 2:56.75.

Irene Mursu came in second in the 50 freestyle at 27.81. Kaydi Mursu was third in the 100 butterfly at 1:22.93. The team of Kaydi Mursu, Lucy Schultz, Hannah Lung and Ellie Smith came in first of the 200 freestyle relay at 2:06.60. Irene Mursu came in second with a time of 1:19.12 of the 100 breaststroke. Olivea McDonald was third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:16.21.

The meet closed with the team of Olivea McDonald, Oakley McNair, Lucy Schultz and Irene Mursu taking first place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:25.80.

The Yellowjackets head to Grand Rapids on Oct. 12 for the Section True Team Championships, before traveling to Morris for their final dual meet of the season.

"For some of the girls, this gives them one week to show us that they deserve a spot on the conference team," Maiden said of the final pair of meets. "Conference is two weeks from Friday and the girls have until then to qualify for sections."
