Perham/NYM opened swim season at Minnewaska/Morris Area
The Perham/New York Mills swimming and diving team kick started the new season on Sept. 1 with its opening meet against the Minnewaska/Morris Area Gators.
The new season kicked off with a new look as spectators are not allowed to attend swimming meets due to COVID-19.
However, that did not slow down the Yellowjackets in their opening meet as they set several personal bests in the new season.
Perham/New York Mills captured first place honors in five events with Brittney Lorentz winning the diving competition, Irene Mursu taking first in the 50 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, while Lucy Schultz finished first in the 100 breaststroke and the team of Mursu, Elle McDonald, Schultz and Kaydi Mursu won the 400 freestyle event to close the meet.
The Gators edged out the Yellowjackets in the final team score, 100-80.
The team of Lucie Meyer, Shanetta Reitmeyer, Taylor Ziemke and Irene Mursu finished second in the 200 medley relay with a time of two minutes and 14.94 seconds.
Reitmeyer finished fourth with a time of 2:40.71 in the 200 freestyle, while Schultz came in second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:50.92.
Mursu followed with her first of two first place finishes when she captured the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.24.
Perham/NYM followed with a second first place finish when Brittney Lorentz captured the diving competition with 196.60 points.
Kaydi Mursu followed with a third place finish with a time of 1:21.58 in the 100 butterfly, while Elle McDonald came in fourth of the 100 freestyle at 1:17.83.
Irene Mursu came in first for the second time when she won the 500 freestyle at 6:09.74. The 200 freestyle relay team of Schultz, McDonald, Reitmeyer and Taylor Ziemke came in third at 2:05.54.
Meyer followed with a third place finish in the 100 backstroke when she touched in at 1:22.77.
Schultz finished first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:28.52, while the team of Irene Mursu, McDonald, Schultz and Kaydi Mursu finished first in the final event of the day. The team won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:41.44.
The next scheduled event for the Perham/NYM swimming team is set for Tuesday, Sept. 8 when they travel to Thief River Falls at 5:30 p.m. The Yellowjackets are scheduled for a meet on Thursday, Sept. 10 at Fosston at 5:30 p.m.
