Perham/NYM second at Mid-State Conference Tournament

The Perham/New York Mills girls tennis team earned a second place finish at the Mid-State Conference Tournament on Sept. 14 at the Wadena and Perham Tennis Courts. The Yellowjackets finished second, behind perennial power Pequot Lakes.

The Patriots captured first place honors with 47 points, while Perham/NYM came in second with 36 points. Staples-Motley came in third with 31 points, while Detroit Lakes came in with 28 points. Crosby-Ironton finished with 22 points, while Park Rapids Area had 20 points and Wadena-DC ended with 12 to round out the field.

The Yellowjackets captured three second place finishes, two third place finishes and a pair of fourth place finishes during the tournament. Jade Lenius finished second at No. 1 singles, JoJo Winkels was second at No. 3 singles and doubles team of Avery Beachy and Kendra Moris came in second at No. 2 doubles.

Mallory Belka was third at No. 4 singles, while the team of LaVonne Lindberg and Maggie Trites came in third at No. 3 doubles. Kiera Radniecki came in fourth at No. 2 singles, while Malia Groff and Mirta Vorderbruggen came in fourth at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 1 singles, Lenius opened with a 6-0, 6-0 over Crosby-Ironton's Emma Stokman in the quarterfinals. Lenius defeated Park Rapids Area's Abby Morris in the semifinals 6-2, 6-1. She was defeated by Pequot Lakes' Megan Muller in the finals.


Winkels rolled in straight sets over Crosby-Ironton's Ellen Silgen 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, before a third set comeback in the semifinals. Winkels defeated Detroit Lakes' Josey Allen. Winkels won the first 7-5, before dropping the second 1-6. She responded with a 10-4 win in the third. However, it was Staples-Motley's Rose Han defeated Winkels 6-1, 6-4 in the finals.

Beachy and Moris opened with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Staples-Motley's Katie Smith and Georgia Kruchten in the quarterfinals. They followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Detroit Lakes' Siri Vagle and Chloe Will in the semifinals, before falling in the finals. Pequot Lakes' Madeline Sherman and Afton Crocker defeated the Perham/NYM duo 7-6 (2) and 6-2, to capture the title.

Lindberg and Trites opened with a first round bye before being upended by Crosby-Ironton's Bella Sablan and Isabelle Viginiri 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. They bounced back with a 6-4, 5-7, 11-9 victory over Detroit Lakes' Marit Engum and Mya Anderson for third place.

Belka continued the strong run for Perham/NYM at No. 4 singles with a third place finish. She defeated Crosby-Ironton's Melanie Siverson 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Belka was edged out by Staples-Motley's Allison Knosalla, 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals. Belka defeated Mary Nelmark in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 for third place honors.

Radniecki opened with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Park Rapids Area's Rachel Herman at No. 2 singles. However, she was defeated by Pequot Lakes' Courtney Boller, 6-3, 6-0, before falling to Staples-Motley's Jenna Dvorak, 6-0, 6-2 in the third place match.

The team of Groff and Vorderbruggen finished fourth overall at No. 1 doubles. They started with a 6-2, 6-7(4) and 10-7 victory over Makenna Duncan and Emily Skjonsberg. However, they were defeated by Kalina Spalj and Tori Decent 6-4, 7-6 (5), before falling to Haley Cichos and Tasha Achermann in the third place contest.
