Perham/NYM swimmers kick off season in Detroit Lakes

The Perham/New York Mills swimming and diving team began its new season with the annual Laker Pentathlon at the Detroit Lakes Community Center on Aug. 27.  The annual event is an introductory meet to competitive swimming for first time swimmers and a nice warm-up for veteran swimmers to kick off their season.

Detroit Lakes won the event with 545.5 points, while Fergus Falls was second with 209.5 points. Perham/New York Mills finished in fifth place with 83 points. Crookston was third, followed by Fosston/Bagley in fourth.

The event featured five events with competitors getting their first taste of competition for the season. Swimmers competed in the 50-butterfly, 50-backstroke, 50-breaststroke and the 100-individual medley.

Detroit Lakes’ Jennifer Tracy finished first in the 50-butterfly with a time of 27.15 seconds. Perham/New York Mills’ Irene Mursu was the top finisher for the Yellowjackets with a time of 31.55. Lacy Richter finished at 31.66.

Tracy was first in the 50-backstroke with a time of 29.50. Mursu was the top finisher in 13th with a time of 33.19. Olivea McDonald came in 22nd when she finished with a time of 34.89.

Detroit Lakes’ Sydney Gulon was first in the 50-breaststroke at 32.42. Mursu came in seventh, while Richter was eighth. Mursu finished at 35.98, while Richter touched in at 36.04. Maggie Ingebrand came in 11th place when she finished at 36.94.

Gulon was first in the 50-freestyle at 35.55. Richter was the top-finishing Yellowjacket at 37.35 for eighth place. Mursu came in 13th place with a time of 27.79.

Gulon completed the Detroit Lakes’ sweep in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:02.28. Mursu finished in 19th for the Yellowjackets at 1:13.14, while Richter finished right behind her at 1:13.39 for 20th place.

The Yellowjackets open official competition when they travel to Fosston to swim against Crookston and Fosston/Bagley on Sept. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
