It was a strong way for the Perham boys tennis team to kick off the 2017 season. The Yellowjackets traveled to Grand Forks, N.D., for a pair of indoor dual meets with Moorhead and East Grand Forks. The second year program is off to a strong start, earning a 5-2 victory over the Spuds and a 4-3 win over the Green Wave.

“Overall, it was nice to face some competition after having a great first week and a half of practice,” Perham head coach Jameson Miller said of the outing.

The Yellowjackets found different ways to win both matches, using a variety of lineups in their victories over Moorhead and East Grand Forks.

“We played two really solid and well coached teams on the day. All 10 of our players helped contribute in earning both wins as we switched up the lineup,” Miller said. “I like this group as they seem more worried about the team score than they do of their individual score.”

The Yellowjackets used a pair of singles wins and swept the doubles in the 5-2 victory over Moorhead. Drew Birkeland earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, while Josh Peterson was victorious, 6-4, 6-2, at No.4 singles against Moorhead. Gunnar Anderson and Ryan Murphy earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Anthony Reese and Dylan Fudge won at No. 2 doubles, 4-6, 6-2, 7-3. Noah Christenson and Aaron Solberg were victorious at No. 3 doubles, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

Birkeland earned the lone singles win at No. 3 against East Grand Forks. He won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. The Yellowjackets captured all three doubles matches, securing the win. Carter Cresap and Dylan Fudge won in straight sets at No. 1, 6-1, 6-4. Anderson and Murphy won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles. Christenson and Solberg completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 doubles, 6-0, 6-2.

The Yellowjackets start the season at 2-0 overall and continue the road swing to start their season. The Yellowjackets will be in action at the Park Rapids Invitational on Saturday, April 8.

“We need to keep working hard and stay focused in practice as we still have a lot of room for growth and improvement,” Miller said.

The Yellowjackets host East Grand Forks on Tuesday, April 11 in their home opener at the Perham Tennis Courts.
