Perham tested at SW Minnesota Challenge

The Perham volleyball team faced some of its toughest competition of the season when they traveled to Marshall, Minn., to take part in the annual Southwest Minnesota Challenge on Sept. 6 and 7.

The Yellowjackets came out of the tournament with one win when they defeated Fergus Falls 2-0. However, they were edged out by River Falls, Prior Lake, Burnsville and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in one of the state's premier early season volleyball tournaments.

The Yellowjackets opened with River Falls and suffered a 14-25, 13-25 defeat in the opening game of the tournament. Lily DeBoer finished with seven kills to lead Perham, while Katie Zepper ended with five kills. Jaden Hackel and Stella Raser had three each in the game. Katie Johnson finished with 10 set assists and DeBoer added seven in the game. Grayce Mickelson finished with six digs, while Johnson and DeBoer had five each.

The Yellowjackets followed with a 25-23, 22-25 and 12-15 defeat to Prior Lake in their second game of the tournament. DeBoer finished with eight kills, while Raser finished with six. Sydney Anderson led the team with eight digs, while Mickelson ended with seven. Lily Lorenson and Raser had five each. Anderson led the team with four ace serves. Johnson had 10 set assists in the loss.

The second day of the tournament opened with a Section 8AA playoff rematch. The Yellowjackets defeated Fergus Falls 25-14 and 28-26. DeBoer led the offensive attack with eight kills, while Raser finished with four kills. Kaylie Kirchenwitz and Anderson had three each. Johnson had 12 set assists, while Mickelson recorded 25 digs. Lorenson finished with 11 digs as well for the Yellowjackets.


Perham suffered a pair of close defeats to Burnsville 20-25 and 22-25, before finishing the tournament with Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. Perham suffered a 13-25 and 18-25 defeat to TMB in its final match of the tournament.

Raser led the way for Perham with seven kills, while Hackel ended with three of them. Johnson, Katie Zepper and DeBoer finished with two kills each. Mickelson led the team with 15 digs, while Anderson added 13. Johnson led the team with two ace serves.

The Yellowjackets sit at 2-6 overall on the season. They return to action with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Hawley on Sept. 10, before traveling to Frazee for the annual battle with the Hornets at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 12.
