Perham third after first day of 8AA Championships

The Perham Girls golf team found itself in third place in one of the toughest section tournament fields on Monday, June 4 at the Bemidji Town and Country Club for the Section 8AA Championships.

The Perham Girls golf team found itself in third place in one of the toughest section tournament fields on Monday, June 4 at the Bemidji Town and Country Club for the Section 8AA Championships.

The Yellowjackets fired a round of 350 on a sunny day in Bemidji, which has them behind Crookston and Detroit Lakes. The Lakers are well on their way to defending their section and state title when they finished the day with a round of 320. Crookston was second with 347.

Crookston’s Ally Tiedeman set the standard with a 76 and holds the day one lead. She has a trio of Lakers on her heels. Maddie Herzog, Anna Chihak and Shelby Busker are right behind with rounds of 77, 80 and 81.

Perham’s Mallory Belka put up the low round for Perham and sits in fifth place. The eighth grader came into the clubhouse with a round of 81, which was the low round for the Yellowjackets.

Perham’s Allie King sits in ninth place overall after shooting an opening day 84. She is followed by Kolbey Bormann, who came in with an 84 as well for 10th place.

It’ll be a battle for the final state tournament spots. The top five not on the qualifying team advance to state. Currently, Belka and King hold two of the five spots. Bormann is tied for the fifth spot with King. East Grand Forks’ Brooke Filipi is right on their heels with a round of 85. Crookston’s Hannah Street has some ground to make up after firing an 89, followed by her teammate, Joslynn Leach, who came in with a 90.

Lexi Kunza finished the opening-day with a round of 101.

Rylee Hunt came into the clubhouse with a 103, while Hope Rosen finished with a 107.

The second round and final day of the Section 8AA Championships continue on June 5 at the Bemidji Town and Country Club.
