Perham picked up their second win in a row this week on Thursday, finding victory against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton , 3-1.

“It has been so great. I have been very proud of the girls for coming together and competing even when we are struggling a bit, we still always seem to rally and get back at it and be competitive,” said head coach Nikki Bruns about her team's performance on Thursday night.

Their first came Tuesday when the Yellowjackets had a clean sweep over a scrappy Frazee-Vergas team. Thursday’s win against the DGF Rebels looked like another clean sweep for the Yellowjackets, but DGF picked up the pace and took the third set from Perham forcing a fourth set in the match.

Bruns said that her team lost the momentum in that third set and that their focus was a bit of their downfall. But, they managed to get back on track in the fourth and seal the game.

“Our focus on our blocking, we didn't execute, we turned that around, our serves got more aggressive, our blocking came around and that changed the whole game for us,” Bruns said.

Lily DeBoer led Perham in kills tallying 14 for the night. Katie Johnson collected 30 assists through the night and served four aces for the Yellowjackets. Senior libero Grayce Mickelson was influential in gameplay for the Yellowjackets. She found herself on the floor most of the night, making crucial moves to keep the ball in play for the Yellowjackets. Mickelson collected 17 digs throughout the matchup.

Bruns said that Mickelson is someone her team can count on to always sacrifice herself to make those crucial saves on the floor. She added that Mickelson’s dedication to her role is a part of the team’s overall success.

“She has been fantastic, she cleans everything up for us,” Bruns said. “ She just has that drive, she is super scrappy and she doesn't give up on anything that’s what makes her such a key role in our success.”

Despite all the challenges that COVID-19 has brought about, the fan energy and level of excitement by Bruns’ team is electric. The past two games both home and visitor teams have brought limited students sections to keep the energy going.

“It is huge for us because we feed off energy and it brings support to our team, I am so proud that we found ways to bring some of those students in to support us,” Bruns said. “That is what Perham is all about.”

The Yellowjackets will take on Hawley next on Monday, Nov. 2 in Perham at 7:30 p.m.
