Pirates stay untouchable with victory over the Vergas Loons

Perham nearly kept Vergas off the board but a late run by the Loons broke the Pirates’ scoreless inning streak.

PERHAM – The Perham Pirates added more doubloons to their treasure in another dominating performance against the Vergas Loons on Sunday.

The Pirates took down the Loons 5-1 to grab their third straight victory to start the season. Perham saw its scoreless innings streak come to a close as Vergas scored its only run in the top of the ninth with two outs on the board.

Perham’s Chas Melvin picked up the win on the mound. He pitched seven innings allowing one hit, zero runs, two walks and punching out a staggering 15 batters. Carter Mulcahy came in for relief and finished the game by surrendering three hits, one run, one walk and striking out three.

The Pirates struck first in the bottom of the third rattling off two runs. Two innings later, back-to-back doubles by Mulcahy and Ben Shumansky added one more run to give Perham a 3-0 lead after five.

Shumansky drove in Mulcahy again in the bottom of the seventh as the lone run of the inning. Chris Ruther blasted a home run in the eighth to expand the Pirates’ lead to 5-0 heading into the final frame. The Loons scored their only run in the bottom of the ninth.

Shumansky finished the game with two RBIs and two hits. Mulachy accounted for three runs and had one hit. Dawson Stevens and Ruther each had an RBI to end the night.

Perham aims to stay unbeaten against New York Mills on Sunday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m. at New York Mills.
