FERGUS FALLS — Perham baseball grabbed a 4-1 road win on Tuesday, May 23, against the Fergus Falls Otters.
Both teams crossed home once in the first inning, setting up a 1-1 tie entering the second frame. The Yellowjackets and Otters remained tied from the second to fourth innings. The Yellowjackets found scoring opportunities in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, scoring a run in each. Fergus Falls continued to be held scoreless through the final three innings, giving the Yellowjackets the 4-1 win. Austin Schmelz went the distance on the mound for the Yellowjackets, pitching all seven innings. He allowed four hits, one run and retired four.
The Yellowjackets narrowly outhit the Otters with five total hits to the Otters’ four.
Perham’s Brock Melgard had a big day at the plate with two hits on three at-bats, he also accounted for one run and an RBI. Rounding out hits for the Yellowjackets were Ashton Detloff, Gamble Bye and Schmelz with one each. Ben Shumansky, Evan Kovash and Detloff each accounted for a run. Gage Aanenson, Schmelz and Bye all had an RBI. The win improved the Jackets’ record to 16-2 overall in regular season play. The team’s record is flawless in section (12-0) and conference (12-0) play.
