Baseball: Perham stings first against Park Rapids, secures 10th consecutive win

The Yellowjackets' bats got going early and often in their defeat of the Panthers on Monday.

PARK RAPIDS – The Perham baseball team hasn’t lost to an opponent since April 24 and continued its dominance on Monday against Park Rapids.

The Yellowjackets took care of business in an 8-3 victory and extended their winning streak to 10 games.

Perham plated two runs in the top of the first with consecutive RBI singles from Blaiz Schmidt and Evan Kovash. The Yellowjackets followed up with an even bigger second inning, tacking on five more runs to extend their lead to 7-0 heading into the third frame.

Parks Rapids got its first run in the bottom of the third. Perham scored one last time in the top of the fifth after Gavin Griffin blasted a line-drive, RBI triple to bring in Gage Aanenson. The Panthers responded with a run in the bottom half of the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-2.

Park Rapids tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth but Omar Briseno closed the game out with a scoreless seventh inning.

Cullen Poole started on the hill for Perham. He finished his outing with five and one-third innings pitched allowing four hits, three runs, five walks and punching out three. Briseno came in for relief and pitched the final one and two-thirds innings giving up just one hit, no runs and striking out one.

The Yellowjackets’ top had a stellar performance at the plate. Leadoff batter Gamble Bye went 1-4 at the plate with two RBIs and accounted for two runs. No. 3 batter Schmidt had two hits and two RBIs in three plate appearances. Kovash batted clean-up and finished the game with two hits and two RBIs in three at-bats. The Yellowjackets finished the game with seven hits to Park Rapids’ five.
