PARK RAPIDS – When the chips were down, the Roseau baseball team found a way to win to punch its ticket to the Class 2A state baseball tournament out of Section 8.

Cooper Flaig cut the Rams’ two-run deficit in half with an RBI double before Noah Urness and Gavin Gunderson bunted in the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth inning.

Three runs were all the Rams needed in their 3-2 win over Perham in the second Section 8-2A title game on Friday.

The Yellowjackets dropped the first of three games against Roseau on Tuesday to slip into the elimination bracket. After beating Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 1-0, Perham forced a second title game with a 5-3 win over the Rams in 11 innings.

Perham jumped ahead of Roseau with a two-run home run from senior Logan Pulju in the fourth inning.

Trailing by a run in the sixth inning, the Yellowjackets squared up four pitches, with three of them resulting in outs. After Ben Shumansky ripped a single, Rian Solberg hit a hard ground-ball double play. Evan Kovash was robbed of a hit up the middle of the field one batter later.

Perham ran into another double play in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Gamble Bye walked, he was thrown out at first after a popped-up bunt. Austin Aanenson lined out with a runner on first to end the game.

Perham finished the season 24-3 and set multiple team records. Its 16-game winning streak is tied for the best in team history. Perham also did it in 1977 and 2019. The Yellowjackets recorded a program-best in hits (268), at-bats (772) and pitching wins (24) in 2022.

Chas Melvin set the program record for career hits with 95 and doubles with 24. Solberg is now the program leader in RBIs with 71. Gage Germolus tied the program record for best winning percentage with a 6-0 record. He also has the lowest single-season ERA at 0.23. Solberg tallied 43 RBIs this season, which is another program best. Aanenson recorded a 5-for-5 performance to break the team record for hits in a single game.
