Boys basketball: Perham clinches piece of conference title in win over Pelican Rapids

PELICAN RAPIDS – The Perham boys basketball team clinched a tie for the Heart O’ Lakes Conference championship with a commanding 53-26 win over Pelican Rapids Saturday night on the opponent’s home court.

The Yellowjackets improved to 21-5 overall and 11-1 in the conference on the season, pulling them into a tie with Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton who achieved the same mark in conference play.

Perham took control of Saturday’s game early in the first half, and never looked back, taking an 18-11 lead into halftime. The Yellowjackets continued to grow the scoring gap early on in the second half, outsourcing the Vikings by 20 points in the second frame.

Jacob Daniels scored 15 points on 6-of-12 (50%) shooting from the field and 1-of-3 (33%) from the 3-point line. He chipped in six rebounds in the winning effort as well. Alex Ohm (9) and Micah Thompson (7) followed in scoring. Thompson led all rebounders with nine, and with six assists. Soren Anderson had a team-leading three steals.

Pelican Rapids was led in scoring by Miguel Torres with 12, followed by Charlie Larson (5) and Ian Fahje (5). Fahje also nabbed a team-high eight rebounds and recorded a block.


Earlier in the week, the Yellowjackets lost a squeaker 48-46 to Thief River Falls on Tuesday on their home court.

In a game where neither team ever led by more than a couple of points, Perham ultimately couldn’t close the gap in the final minutes of the game.

Thompson was the scoring leader with 12, adding six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block to his scoring line. Anderson followed closely with 11 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds for a double-double. Daniels finished with nine points and three steals. Ohm led the team with seven assists.

Jack Manning (21) and Jake Friedrich (10) led Thief River’s scoring. Friedrich also led the team with five rebounds.
