Girls basketball: Defense leads Perham to win over Frazee in Battle of the Bees
The Perham girls basketball team handled Frazee 60-41 on Thursday night behind standout defense.
PERHAM – The Perham girls basketball team survived a tough shooting night to knock off Frazee in the Battle of the Bees.
The Yellowjackets moved to 4-0 on the season with a 60-41 win over the Hornets.
“Well, it wasn’t pretty, but we clamped down and played some pretty good defense to end the first half and in the second half,” Perham head coach TJ Super said. “About halfway through the first half, Willow (Thiel) went into takeover mode and was a beast the rest of the game. Her drive, kicks and offensive rebounding got us going on offense.”
Thiel ended the game leading all scorers with 20 points. She also added 14 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Thiel made 7-of-10 from the field and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Thiel’s performance in the post helped open up the shooters outside. The Yellowjackets made 12-of-31 behind the arc. Olivia Pilgrim led the three-point attack, sinking 4-of-8 attempts. Mya Morris and Cora Grismer both scored nine points on three-pointers.
The Yellowjackets only allowed Frazee to score 16 second-half points. They finished with 17 total steals. Pilgrim had five steals herself, followed by Thiel with four steals and Grismer with three.
Perham’s win over Frazee is their first Heart O’Lakes victory of the season. Frazee drops to 1-3, and is 0-3 in conference play.
