Girls basketball: Yellowjackets steamroll Warriors 64-26 in first round of Section 8AA tournament

The Perham girls basketball team will play Fergus Falls on Saturday, March 4, after beating Warroad in the first round of the Section 8AA tournament.

PERHAM — The Perham girls basketball team’s regular-season dominance continued into the postseason.

The top-seeded Yellowjackets (23-3) defeated No. 16 Warroad (4-23) 64-26 at The Hive on Thursday, March 2, in the first round of the Section 8AA tournament.

Perham dominated the first half with a staggering 43 points. Senior Mya Morris led the Jackets in scoring through the first 18 minutes, hitting four 3-pointers. Junior Willow Thiel scored 13 points in the first half, followed by senior Olivia Pilgrim with six.

The Warriors, for their part, put up 17 points, not nearly enough to close the gap, ending the first half at 43-17.

Perham let off the gas in the second half. Morris and sophomore point guard Kaia Anderson each dropped five points in the final frame.

The Yellowjackets’ top scorers were Morris with 17 points, Thiel with 14, Cora Grismer with seven and Pilgrim with six.

Six Perham seniors were honored following Thursday's game at The Hive for Senior Appreciation Night.

Perham celebrated Morris, Pilgrim, Lily Aakre and Olivia Rosenthal. Senior team managers Myriah Tharaldson and Autumn Ziemann were also honored for their contributions to the team.

The Yellowjackets will now face off against No. 8 Fergus Falls Otters at The Hive on Saturday, March 4. Perham bested Fergus Falls twice during the regular season, outscoring the Otters by over 20 points in both matchups.
