Softball: Perham shuts out Park Rapids to earn fifth win of the season

PERHAM – The Perham softball team earned a shutout win over Park Rapids on Thursday night with its ace on the mound.

Steph Meissner threw seven shutout innings. She allowed just two hits and struck out five batters in the Yellowjackets’ (5-14) 2-0 win over the Panthers. Three Park Rapids batters reached base in total. Meissner retired the first 14 batters she faced in order.

Morgan Burkman singled and scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Hanna Hunter added another run in the sixth inning after getting on base with a walk. Ryleigh Mickelson and Burkman each had two hits. Meissner and Mallory Greiff also recorded hits.

The Yellowjackets finished the regular season with a pair of 10-run losses against Breckenridge on Friday. Perham earned the seventh seed in the Section 8-2A South sub-section and played Hawley (12-4) in the first round. The Nuggets won the season series with a doubleheader sweep on Apr. 28.

The Section 8-2A softball tournament is a double-elimination bracket. All first-round games are on May 24, before the second round kicks off on May 26. The high seeds host the first round. Perham will play the winner or the loser of Barnesville and Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday in Frazee.
