Track: Yellowjackets girls track team takes title in Pelican Rapids; boys finish third
The girls earned 133.5 points to best second-place Park Christian's 108 points. The boys grab 112.5 points, behind first-place United Clay-Becker's 154.33 points and DGF's 128.5 points.
PELICAN RAPIDS – The Perham girls track team claimed first place at the Hank Emmel Invitational at Pelican Rapids High School on Thursday, May 4, edging Park Christian which trailed by about 25 points and claimed second in the 11-team meet.
The Yellowjacket girls scored 133.5, and Park Christian tallied 108 points. Following in third was Barnesville with 106 points, followed by Pelican Rapids (102.83), Ottertail Central (72), Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (52), United Clay-Becker (48.66), Nevis (40), West Central Area (32), Breckenridge (23) and Hillcrest Lutheran (19).
The Perham boys track team finished third with 112.5 points, behind first-place United Clay-Becker with 154.33 points and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton with 128.5 points. In fourth place was Pelican Rapids with 111 points, followed by Park Christian (55), West Central Area (45.33), Barnesville (38), Ottertail Central (37), Nevis (25), Hillcrest Lutheran (22) and Breckenridge (9.33).
The Yellowjackets girls were led by a trio that placed in multiple events, including Lauryn Rustad who collected a title in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.24 and a matching title in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 47.39. She was also part of the girls 4x200-meter relay that finished second.
Kennedy Pilgrim showed out as well, finishing third in the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 5 inches, a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, 2 inches and a sixth-place finish in the 100 meters in a time of 13.66. She also competed in the 4x100-meter relay team that finished third.
Also, Gracie Morris finished first in the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet and a third-place finish in the 800 meters in a time of 2:25.35. She also competed on the 4x200-meter team with Rustad that finished second.
Other second-place finishes included Ella Hendrickson in the 1600 meters in a time of 5:38.9; the 4x200-meter relay team of Morris, Rustad, Addi Hackel and Mya Morris which finished in 1:51.38; the 4x400-meter relay team of Aurora Schumacher, Quincy Anderson, Aspen Rhode and Liz Birkeland which finished in 4:30.99; and Willow Thiel in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet.
Also notable was the Yellowjackets placing four girls in the pole vault, including Morris’ first-place finish. Natalie Rooney finished second with a vault of 10 feet, Maya Richter in third at 9 feet and Danial Van Watermulen in fifth at 9 feet.
The boys team was led by Tyrus Coudron who claimed a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 meters in a time of 11.24 and the 200 meters in a time of 23.33. He also ran in the 4x200-meter relay that finished in first place.
Trystan Larson also performed well, taking sixth place in the pole vault at 10 feet and a seventh-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 18.21 seconds. He also ran in the 4x100-meter relay that took sixth place.
First-place finishes included Micah Thompson in the 800 meters in a time of 1:58.28; Aiden Kennedy in the pole vault with a vault of 12 feet; and the 4x200-meter relay team of Aiden Kennedy, Noah Thompson, Dayton Koetke and Coudron which finished in 1:33.20.
Notable events for the boys team included the 800 meters in which Thompson finished first and was followed by Dylan Guck in third with a time of 2:04.92, Henry Mathiason in fourth place with 2:07.99 and Carter Flatau in fifth with 2:08.35.
Also, the Yellowjackets placed four in the pole vault, including Kennedy’s first-place finish, Noah Novotny in second at 11 feet 6 inches, Noah Thompson in fourth with 11 feet and Larson’s sixth-place finish at 10 feet.
