PELICAN RAPIDS – The Yellowjackets baseball team tallied two conference wins in a doubleheader sweep 14-4 and 10-0 over the host team Pelican Rapids Vikings on April 27.
In the first game where Perham was the away team, the Vikings jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the first inning. But the Yellowjackets quickly took control of the game, beginning a scoring run in the top of the third that included three in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, five in the sixth and one more run in the seventh. The Vikings never recovered from the onslaught.
Several Jackets led the offensive explosion, including Blaiz Schmidt who tallied three hits in four plate appearances, scoring three runs and collecting two RBIs.
Evan Kovash (2-3), Ben Shumansky (2-5) and Ashton Detloff (2-3) all added two hits in the offensive bonanza as well. Conner Colliton also collected a hit. The Jackets had 10 hits in the game.
Kovash pitched five innings to earn the win, giving up two runs on two hits and walking one, but striking out eight. Austin Schmelz pitched two innings, giving up two runs on three hits and garnering three strikeouts.

In the day’s second game where Perham was the home team, the Yellowjackets showed no mercy as they 10-run-ruled the Vikings by the end of the fifth inning. The Jackets immediately scored three runs in the bottom of the first, and tallied three in the third, three in the fourth and the final run needed for the win in the fifth inning.
Gamble Bye (2-3), Kovash (2-3) and Shumansky (2-3) all collected two hits in the pummeling. Shumanksy tallied four RBIs in Game 2 to lead the Yellowjackets. Perham notched 11 hits overall.
Detloff garnered the win, pitching five innings, giving up one hit and one walk, but mowing down 10 Vikings batters with strikeouts.
