The Perham Yellowjackets almost pulled off the improbable when they were defeated by the No. 1 ranked team in Class AA, the Roseau Rams, during the first day of the Grand8 Holiday Tournament in Perham on Dec. 28.

Eventually, the Rams held off a furious comeback and out-lasted the Yellowjackets 71-68 in overtime.

The Yellowjackets trailed by 29 points at one point in the first half and trailed by 20 points early in the second half.

Katie Borowicz spoiled the comeback attempt with 20 points. Emma Walling ended the day with 14 points, while Julia Braaten finished with 13 points.

Mesa Schultz led the Yellowjackets with 19 points, while Sydney Anderson added 18 points and Katie Johnson finished with 13 points.

The Yellowjackets used a different look on defense, which started to frustrate the Rams as the second half moved along. The defense tested the patience of the Rams and ended up leading to missed shots and turnovers in the second half.

Perham rallied back and cut the lead down to five after 3-pointers from Lisa Meader and a pair of them from Anderson. Anderson was strong down the stretch for Perham. She scored seven of 18 points in the closing minutes, including two clutch free throws with 14.2 seconds to go in the second half to force overtime.

However, it was Borowicz, who calmly settled things down in overtime for the Rams. The sophomore scored four of the team’s 11 points, but controlled the basketball for the most part. Roseau built a 67-63 overtime lead, but Mesa Schultz cut the lead back to one with an old-fashioned 3-point play. However, Roseau was able to close the game out at the free throw line. The Rams hit 10 of its 13 free throws in the overtime session.

The Yellowjackets will take on Sauk Centre in the Grand8 third place game, while Roseau will take on Alexandria Area in a battle of two No. 1 ranked teams. Alexandria, ranked No. 1 in Class AAA, defeated Sauk Centre in the opening-round of the tournament.
