The Perham softball team got its first two wins of the season in a doubleheader at Barnesville Thursday, May 6. The Yellowjackets defeated the Trojans 4-2 in the first game and 11-9 in the second game.
The Yellowjackets scored early after Grayce Mickelson walked and then scored on a wild pitch. Lily Lorenson singled, and Katie Johnson drove her in on a ground out, putting the Yellowjackets up 2-0 after the first inning.
Pitching for Perham, Johnson had a stellar game. She walked one batter and gave up one hit in the game, both in the fourth inning. Barnesville's Trinity Gregg walked and eventually scored on a single by Sam Passa. Anna Stanford ground out but drove in Passa for the Trojans' only two runs of the game. Johnson, who pitched a complete game for the Yellowjackets, also had 16 strikeouts.
Perham took the lead in the seventh inning. With two outs, Johnson singled and advanced to second on a Barnesville error. Emma Daniels drove in Johnson with an RBI single and advanced on the throw to home. Daniels then scored on a wild pitch to make the final score 4-2.
Game two was a high-scoring battle, but Perham managed to edge out Barnesville for an 11-9 victory over the Trojans.
Barnesville scored in the top of the first inning on an error. In the bottom of the first, Perham's Mickelson singled, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by Lorenson. Emma Daniels walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Honer, making the score 2-1 after the first.
In the fourth inning, Perham's Alivia Trepanier bunted and reached first base on a throwing error. She scored when Mickelson reached on an error.
The Trojans turned on the offense in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Lauren Halvorson had a two-run homerun for Barnesville. Perham responded in the bottom of the fifth with an eight-run inning. Trepanier had an RBI single, followed by a bases-clearing double by Lorenson. Mickelson and Johnson both had RBI singles in the inning as well.
Barnesville answered with a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh inning. With two runners on base for the Trojans, Johnson induced a fly ball to end the game and give Perham its second victory of the season.
The Yellowjackets improve to 2-3 on the season and host Detroit Lakes at Arvig Park Monday, May 17, at 4 p.m.

Yellowjackets lose to Osakis Tuesday, May 4
Perham faced Osakis Tuesday, May 4, and lost its third consecutive game of the season by a score of 17-6. in Osakis.
Perham jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Lily Lorenson hit a solo homerun, followed by a two-run single from Leah Honer to give Perham a 3-0 lead.
Osakis started to come back in the first inning, scoring two runs, and the Silverstreaks rallied for seven runs in the second inning and five runs in the third inning.
In the fourth inning, the Yellowjackets scored three runs, with Lorenson and Katie Johnson each driving in a run. Osakis answered right back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three additional runs. The Yellowjackets couldn't get a rally going in the fifth inning and were unable to score, losing the game.
