State-ranked teams square off in Perham

Two of the top-ranked teams in the state of Minnesota met at the Hauer Gymnasium on Jan. 9 when the Willmar Cardinals invaded Perham to take on the Yellowjackets in a gymnastics dual.

Two of the top-ranked teams in the state of Minnesota met at the Hauer Gymnasium on Jan. 9 when the Willmar Cardinals invaded Perham to take on the Yellowjackets in a gymnastics dual.

The Cardinals entered the contest ranked second in the state for Class A teams, while the Yellowjackets came in ranked seventh in the state for Class A.

Both teams put on a display as the Yellowjackets continued their climb score wise, finishing the meet with a score of 143.175, which is their best to date. It comes of another strong performance where the Yellowjackets took first at the Clemensen Invitational in Princeton.


Sydney Bahls earned top honors on the vault, while Jada Olsen was first on the bars, beam and won the all-around competition.

Olsen had another strong meet and finished with a score of 37.50, earning top honors by more than a point. Willmar’s Erica Schramm finished with a 36.35 for second place, while Bahls was third. Bahls finished with a 35.90. Dena Fischer came in fourth at 35.10 and Mackenzie Rohloff was fifth in the all-around at 34.40.

The Yellowjackets took the top two spots in the vault behind Bahls and Olsen. Bahls finished with a 9.550, while Olsen came in with a 9.5.

Olsen was the top performer on the bars for Perham. She finished first, earning a 9.60. Fischer followed with a third place finish, earning a 9.05. Rohloff was fifth on the bars, finishing with an 8.50.

Olsen earned top honors on the beam as well. She finished with a 9.550, which was .3 points higher than the closest competitor. Bahsl finished in fourth place for Perham, finishing with a 9.00.

Rohloff was the top finishing Yellowjacket on the floor. She finished third with a 9.25.

The Yellowjackets return to action with a meet at Fergus Falls on Friday, Jan. 12, beginning at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity. The varsity meet will follow the conclusion of the junior varsity event.
