Yellowjackets second at Melrose/Sauk Centre

The Perham/New York Mills boys swimming team continued its busy stretch by competing in the Sauk Centre Triangular with Melrose/Sauk Centre and Morris Area on Jan. 16 in Sauk Centre.

The Yellowjackets finished with 86 points, for second place. Melrose/Sauk Centre captured the crown with 177 points, while Morris was third with 45 points.

“With our whole team back in the pool for the first time in a few weeks, we saw a lot of great races,” Perham/NYM assistant coach Jensen Maiden said. “We also saw some significant time cuts, with the whole team cutting a total of 157.05 seconds to set 32 more personal records.”

Perham/NYM senior Aaron Wegscheid earned top honors in the 50 freestyle. Wegscheid finished first with a time of 25.81 seconds. He was the lone individual event winner for the Yellowjackets during the triangular.

The Yellowjackets captured several third place finishes. The team of Kevin Swanson, Duncan Skorup, Gavin Kehoe and Wegscheid took third place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:09.07.

Duncan Skorup came in third place in the 200 freestyle event with a time of 2:24.48. Kyle Swanson came in third place with a time of the 200 individual medley at 2:33.84. Gavin Kehoe came in third place with a time of 1:11.47. Kyle Swanson was third in the 500 freestyle, he finished with a time of 6:05.96.

Wegscheid, Duncan Skorup, Jett Karels and Kyle Swanson came in third place with a time of 1:52.63 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Gavin Kehoe came in third in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:16.48, while Duncan Skorup earned third place honors in the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:18.96.

The 400 freestyle relay team closed out the meet in third with a time of 4:13.08, members included Jett Karels, Kyle Swanson, Kevin Swanson and Aaron Wegscheid.

“Overall, we could not be more pleased with the progress the team is making. They are working really hard and they are starting to reap the benefits,” Maiden said. “They have a few of their hardest workouts of the season coming up in the next couple of days. We’ll be spending some more time on starts and turns next Monday to prepare for our next meet. The boys will get to prove themselves next Tuesday in Morris.”
