PERHAM - The Perham Yellowjacket football team is participating in “Tackle Cancer Night” Friday, September 6, during their game against East Grand Forks. The Minnesota Football Coaches Association has challenged high school football teams to join them in raising funds for the Minnesota- based Randy Shaver Cancer Research Foundation. Last year the Perham Yellowjackets joined 130 other teams across the state of Minnesota to raise money for many types of cancer research at Minnesota facilities.
The Minnesota Football Coaches Association and the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund are excited for Year Two of Tackle Cancer! Last year, 130 Minnesota High School Football Programs raised over $120,000 to help find a cure for cancer.
Cancer is a disease that has impacted all communities, most of our families, and many of our football teams throughout Minnesota. For the past 30 years, Randy Shaver has been there every Friday night in the fall covering high school football. According to the Shaver Foundation, this partnership seems so natural! Together, we are going to TACKLE CANCER.
The mission of the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund is to support the cancer community in Minnesota by funding research, prevention, treatment and other programs relating to the cancer community’s needs. That’s where you and your football team come in. We are partnering with the MFCA to challenge every high school football team to sponsor at least one “Tackle Cancer” night during the month of September.

Randy Shaver has been the Sports Director at KARE-11 Television (NBC Affiliate) in Minneapolis/St. Paul since 1994. While his focus has always been on cancer research and the Minnesota cancer community, Randy’s fight became intensely personal when he himself became a patient shortly after his 1998 tournament. Diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin's Disease, Randy's treatment and subsequent remission have understandably made him even more passionate than ever about finding a cure.

According to Randy Shaver’s wife Roseann Giovanotto-Shaver, the focus of the organization is to support cancer research in Minnesota. “We want the cure for cancer to be found in our state, and we want Minnesotans to be able to find treatments close to home.” When asked if they have a particular cancer they fund, Roseanne states they are giving grants to treat all types of cancer.
Cutting edge research and technology is of great importance to this foundation. This past year grants have been awarded to the Minnesota Medical Foundation for numerous programs-among them: research to develop therapies to treat pancreatic cancer by studying micro-RNA gene regulatory mechanisms; a grant allowed funding of targeted therapy for forms of ovarian cancer that are not responsive to conventional chemotherapies, and immunological based treatments that capitalize on the body’s natural defense systems like natural killer cells to treat cancer.
