The Perham tennis team opened the season with a stern test against a strong Class AA opponent when they squared off with the Bemidji Lumberjacks on April 16 in Bemidji.

It was the first competitive meet for the Yellowjackets in the 2019 season and they were edged out by the Lumberjacks 4-3 in a close dual. The Yellowjackets captured two singles matches and one doubles match in the defeat.

“Overall, it was nice to get out and play tennis finally after being off a week,” Perham head coach Jameson Miller said. “I thought we hit well at times and at other times we could tell that we’ve only had two practices on the year.”

Landon Stevens and Jordan Muench earned singles wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, for Perham. The team of Zach Peterson and Dylan Fudge were victorious at No. 3 doubles.

“We have a lot to improve on and work as the season goes along,” Miller said after the conclusion of the team’s first match of the season.

Stevens dropped the first set 5-7 against Jonah Fuhrman, but responded with a 6-4 win in the second set and closed with a 10-6 win in the third set.

Muench rolled in straight sets at No. 4 singles. He earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Max Harris.

Peterson and Fudge went the distance at No. 3 doubles. They defeated Ben Hess and Logan Jenson 6-4, 3-6 and 6-4 for their first win of the season.

Elijah Schmidt and Anthony Reese were defeated at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, while Gunnar Anderson and Drew Birkeland were defeated at No. 1 doubles, while Carter Cresap and Josh Peterson were edged at No. 2 doubles.

The Yellowjackets are scheduled to return home for their first home dual of the season on April 18 at the Perham Tennis Courts at 4:30 p.m.
