The Perham/New York Mills girls tennis team started the season with a 7-0 sweep of Sauk Centre before falling 6-1 to state-ranked Foley in Foley on Aug. 16 to kick off the new season for the Yellowjackets.

"Overall, it was a good day of tennis for us," Perham/NYM head coach Jameson Miller said. "Sauk Centre is a very consistent team and I thought we did a good job of matching their consistency and waited for the right shot to hit a winner on."

The Yellowjackets opened the season with a pair of seniors in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots and they both came away victorious over Sauk Centre. Jade Lenius defeated Audrey Zenzen 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Jojo Winkels won in straight sets as well with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gabby Tschida.

Junior Avery Beachy earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Natalie Berndt at No. 3 singles and sophomore Mallory Belka was victorious at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Addy Hoffman to complete the singles sweep.

The senior duo of Mirta Vorderbruggen and Malia Groff were victorious at No. 1 doubles. They defeated Sarah Middendorf and Brianna Middendorf in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

Kiera Radniecki and Kendra Morris were victorious in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. They defeated Julia Marthaler and Gaby Dickinson 6-3, 6-2.

The Perham/NYM duo of LaVonne Lindberg and Maggie Trites edged out Nicole Bartos and Micheala Dammann in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Perham/NYM followed with a stern test against Foley. The Falcons swept the singles event and dropped just one match in the doubles portion to defeat the Yellowjackets 6-1 in their second meet of the season.

"Foley is one of the top programs every year, I thought we really hung in well against them," Miller said. "We can't be content and must continue to get better every time we are on the court."

Peyton Kopel defeated Lenius in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, while Brooke Beier defeated Radniecki 6-2, 6-3. Jayden Kloss defeated Avery Beachy 6-2, 6-0, while Savannah Gapinski defeated Belka 6-3, 6-2 in singles action.

Perham/NYM's lone win came at No. 2 doubles from Winkels and Morris. The duo defeated Olivia Falk and Alaina Hageman 7-5, 2-6 and 13-11.

Bailey Gapinski and Jami Novak defeated Vorderbruggen and Groff 6-4, 6-2, while Sydney Gapinski and Kristen O'Brien defeated Lindberg and Jazzmin Branchaud in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

Next action for the Perham/NYM girls tennis team will be at the annual Highway 10 Tournament on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at the tennis courts in Wadena and Staples.
