The Perham/New York Mills girls tennis team will face a familiar opponent when they kick off Section 8A tennis playoffs on Oct. 10 at Courts Plus in Fargo.
The Yellowjackets, the No. 2 seed, will take on the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines, who earned the No. 7 seed for section play. The Yellowjackets and the Wolverines closed the regular season with Perham/NYM earning a 7-0 win over the Wolverines.
The two teams are very familiar with each other on-and-off the court. The Wolverines are coached by former Yellowjacket, Jordan Cresap, who is the son of Perham/NYM's assistant coach Dave Cresap.
Thief River Falls earned the No. 1 seed and will open play against Parkers Prairie, while Roseau will take on Crookston in a quarterfinal match. The winner of the Perham/NYM and Wadena-DC match will take on the winner of East Grand Forks and Park Rapids Area in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 10.
The tournament schedule has changed due to the upcoming weather forecast. The second day, which features the Section 8A Team Championship and the first round of the individual singles and doubles tournament, has been moved to Oct. 16 at Courts Plus. The third day, which is the tournament's final day, has been moved to Oct. 17. All the matches will be played at Courts Plus in Fargo.
Jade Lenius and Avery Beachy will be competing in the Section 8A Individual singles tournament on Oct. 16. Lenius will take on Crookston's Hannah Lindemoen in the opening round, while Beachy will take on Thief River Falls' Ava Yuska in her opening round match.
The doubles duo of Malia Groff and Mirta Vorderbruggen will take on Park Rapids Area's Jada Renneberg and Mickey Clark in the tournament's first round. JoJo Winkels and Kiera Radniecki will take on Haylee Bennet and Madison Verbout of Roseau in the opening round of the doubles tournament as well.
