The Perham/New York Mills girls tennis team season came to a close at the Section 8A Team Tournament when it was edged out by Thief River Falls 5-2 in the Section 8A Championship match on Oct. 10 at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
The Yellowjackets finished the season with a 16-4 mark overall after picking up a pair of wins over Wadena-Deer Creek 5-2 and East Grand Forks 4-3 en route to the Section 8A Championship match. However, the Yellowjackets ran into a very strong opponent in state-ranked Thief River Falls. The Prowlers had just enough to end the Yellowjackets' end of the season run.
"Overall, it was a very special year by a very special group," Perham/NYM head coach Jameson Miller said. "Our seniors accomplished much on the court that I hope they are proud of. I know I am, but I'm really more proud of the individuals that they've become over the year."
Miller said he thanked the team for the enjoyment they have provided during the year and their time with the program.
"They're great people who will go on to accomplish great things in whatever they decide to do," Miller said. "We thank them for all the enjoyment they have given us coaching them and what they brought to the team."
The four seniors in the finals match, Jade Lenius, JoJo Winkels, Mirta Vorderbruggen and Malia Groff, played valuable roles throughout the regular season and into the section tournament for Perham/New York Mills. The Yellowjackets finished second two years ago, lost in the semifinals last year and runner up in 2019.
The Yellowjackets opened play against a much-improved Wadena-Deer Creek team. The Yellowjackets earned a 5-2 victory, taking two singles matches and sweeping the doubles portion.
Winkels and Mallory Belka earned wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, while the doubles team of Groff/Vorderbruggen rolled at No. 1 doubles. The team of Avery Beachy and Kendra Moris won at No. 2 doubles, while LaVonne Lindberg and Maggie Trites won at No. 3 doubles.
The Yellowjackets followed with a narrow victory over East Grand Forks in the semifinals, winning the match 4-3. Perham/NYM won three of the singles matches and earned a doubles win, to advance to the finals.
Winkels, Beachy and Belka all won in singles action, while the team of Moris and Radniecki secured a key doubles point at No. 2 doubles, helping the Yellowjackets advance to the finals.
In the finals, The Prowlers captured two singles points and swept the doubles competition on their way to the victory. Lenius and Belka earned singles wins during the match for Perham/NYM.
Lenius and Beachy will now compete in the Section 8A Individual Singles Tournament on Oct. 16 at Courts Plus. Lenius earned the No. 2 seed, while Beachy is the No. 11 seed for the tournament. The doubles duo of Winkels and Radniecki earned the No. 5 seed, while the team of Groff and Vorderbruggen earned the No. 8 seed for the doubles tournament.
