Top-seeded Cardinals eliminate Yellowjackets in 8A tennis quarterfinals

STAPLES -- The top-ranked Staples-Motley girls tennis team gave up only 10 games in seven matches in sweeping Perham in the quarterfinal round of Section 8A tennis playoffs.

STAPLES - The top-ranked Staples-Motley girls tennis team gave up only 10 games in seven matches in sweeping Perham in the quarterfinal round of Section 8A tennis playoffs .

The loss ends the team portion of the season for the Yellowjackets.

Perham advanced to the match-up with a 5-2 victory over New York Mills Monday in the pigtail game.

Josie Beachy defeated Abby Salo in straight sets three and two. Julia Pearson won her three-singles match two and love over Jewelle Boe.

The Eagles forfeited the four-singles match.

Perham took two of three doubles matches to clinch the victory.

The No. 1 duo of Katie Howey and Betsy Pearson needed three sets to dispatch of Mallory Weber and Jordin Roberts 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Kori Salo and Maddy Keskitalo defeated Perham’s Danielle Graham and Alyssa Morris in a tight match of tiebreakers 7-6, 7-6.

Aubrey Hill and Savanna Olson defeated the Eagles No. 3 doubles team of Mikaila Honer and Robyn Harper three and four.

New York Mills’ other point came at No. 1 singles where Victoria Selander defeated Maggie Rennicke in three sets 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.

In the three other quarterfinal matches, Crookston defeated Roseau 5-2; Pequot Lakes blanked East Grand Forks 7-0 and Park Rapids Area defeated Wadena-Deer Creek 7-0.

No. 1 Staples-Motley will face No. 4 Crookston and No. 2 Park Rapids Area will play No. 3 Pequot Lakes. 

The semifinals will be played in Grand Forks.
